Ozone Generator
updated: Oct 21, 2012, 4:30 PM
I recently purchased a 2005 Nissan that is really clean except the
previous owners had a pet and either they or the dealership used some
kind of masking scent/air freshener/cleaner in the car and it stinks like an
old cheap hotel room. Very strong scent that I am unable to get rid of
using baking soda, vinegar, charcoal on the other usual remedies.
Wondering if anyone knows where I can rent an ozone generator, or a
referral to a good detailer who can get rid of the odor without adding a
new one. I don't want the car to smell "clean." I don't want the car to smell
at all.

Mario's in Old Town Goleta. Had mine done there, bought a used car from a smoker, worked great!

It might not be what you think it is! It might be the cabin air filter. These become very dirty and can get a very bad musty scent. Try replacing this first then try a full interior clean if this does not help.

Beware that ozone is massively destructive to some materials. Some foam and rubber products crumble after O3 exposure. A friend lost his speaker cones treating his room with ozone.

A major dog accident (don't ask, but it involved the word "explosive") befell the back seat of my wife's ex-Volvo and you couldn't even drive the car for a few days, the smell was so bad. I took it to the quickie car wash--I'm not sure what it's called--at State Street & Ontare Road and they had the interior in as-new condition in an afternoon. It wasn't cheap--I think slightly more than a hundred bucks--but it was worth every nickel.

There's a Seinfeld episode about this very problem. Jerry parked the car on the wrong side of town, rolled the windows down, threw the keys in the window, right in front of a street thug. He never saw the car again.

Years ago, I had a car that developed an embarrassing noxious odor inside. Turns out it was the vinyl (or whatever the material was) on the back headrests beginning to deteriorate from the sun's rays.

Maybe try Ozium. It kills airborne bacteria. Clean or replace the air cabin filter too as mentioned "334007" is a good idea.

Try calling or writing into the Click & Clack brothers (Car Talk on National Public Radio). They'll probably have a few good ideas, and at the very least, you'll have a good laugh.

Before you spend a lot of money - have you tried Febreze! Our dog got skunked about 11:00 one night, and since we couldn't really deal with him then, we put him in the office for the night. Next day, after we had bathed the dog, etc. I took the Febreze and sprayed the whole room, carpet too and in particular 2 office-chairs: one part leather and part fabric and the other fabric. I then took them outside for the rest of the day - and to my amazement they were fine!

Unfortunately the Car Talk brothers have retired, and now all you hear is re-runs. Fortunately, they were on for 20+ years, so even the re-runs are informative & funny

re Car Talk, the shows are re-runs, but their website is a fountain of information. So many questions have been asked multiple times, there is likely an answer to your on the website.
