What's your favorite S.B. day hike and why? Saddlerock's one of my favorites with it's steep incline and incredible view from the top!

San Ysidro
It runs along the creek and is tree shaded. The vegetation and creek are awesome in the spring. There are a lot of "regulars" that share the experience on a daily basis. The trail is well maintained.

Mine is to my refrigerator. Why? Because I get exercise and food all at the same time. Bonus!

Hendry's Beach at low tide (no rattlesnakes or ticks and it's flat!)

Agree, San Ysidro is a nice one as is Rattlesnake Canyon since they aren't too steep and nicely shaded.

Any place without man-made carnivorous canines running loose. They terrorize the native wildlife and spread poison oak.

By the way, if I click "agree" or "helpful" to someone's comment, how exactly does that benefit anyone? Or indeed, what does it do at all?

Romero Canyon loop. Spectacular and most of the mountain bikers are very friendly and respectful.

Mine doesn't involve a trail but it's a hike! From the bottom of Carrillo Hill to the Mesa & back, it's got amazing views!

A very short (45 min max) trail but a hidden jewel is Montecito Trails off San Leandro Road. The trailhead starts at a green "house" surrounded by a white picket fence, but it's public property, shady, flat, and scenic.

821: The recent record from the Cater water plant to inspiration point is just under 30 minutes. For the uninitiated, that is very fast!

Favorite trail: Romero single track to the top. Spectacular 360-degree view!

It's a secret, a place off the tourist map that takes some considerable climbing with a nice cool pool to soak in after the strenuous hike up. No not T.F.

918 stole my line. I wouldn't ever tell anyone my favorite hike. I can still remember when, if we found a great spot, it stayed among friends and wasn't broadcast everywhere to everyone. That's when things used to be kept secret. Not like now, where people have to "out" every single cool thing to see or do. Negative nanny me. I don't care. I miss the time when exploring was all about discovery and wonder.

NATUREBOY, I'm with you. What does this "agree" thing accomplish?

And ----is a "man-made canine" some kind of Tim Burton Halloween dog? Dog averse people can honi ko'u 'elemu. (Hawaiian, look it up.)

The beach from Linden Ave. in Carp to Rincon Point, and back. Sometimes the beach is closed for the seal rookery but no big deal.

Depends on the time of year for me. In wet years, or after a good rain (with a couple days rest to let the trail dry out) I love to hike up to the falls on the Tunnel trail, and if you're feeling really good, make it a loop by leaving another car at Rattlesnake trailhead.

At super minus tides, I like to walk on the beach for miles and miles!

My favorite day hike is the 25-foot trek to my Lexus parked at the curb. I can then drive to Solvang for pastries while the nature lovers are battling ticks and rattlesnakes on trails that usually aren't even paved. No Lyme disease or antivenin shots for me, thank you!

In case of a nuclear holocaust I'll be one of the first survivors to go. How could I get at my tinned food if the electric can opener won't work? I suppose I could always eat Zorro the husky, since I have a gas barbecue, but I doubt he'd provide all that many meals. Maybe at that time I'd hike the one mile to downtown and see if Three Pickles might still be open.

All this talk of hiking has made me hungry. Time for me and Zorro to hike to the Lexus and find some ice-cream. I sure do miss Foster Freeze sometimes.

I agree with those who like Romero Canyon.

Cathedral Peak, approaching from the front or from La Cumbre Peak, is up there too but I don't always have the time & energy.

Gaviota Wind Caves are also fun. And a special treat is Naples. Guess I'm having a hard time picking a favorite :)

Romero Canyon where it loops around to the fire road is great! Part nature trail, part fire-road with incredible views of Montecito homes and the view of the ocean beyond. Great hike, about a two-hour loop, good inclines but not TOO strenuous.

There are still a few great places that are known, but are no longer popular due either to lack of parking or just fell off the radar, even a few short ones in or near town that amaze me by their unpopularity. They would never stay that way if you broadcast it to a 1,000 people. It's like telling your favorite chanterelle spots.
