If you had a valuable ring and wanted to get the best price possible, which honest, reputable and local person/business would you ask to sell it for you?

Person to person is the only way to get any value out of jewelry, especially diamonds. Consider consignment or Craigslist.

Talk to Pat at Patco on Haley. Not sure if he does this kind of thing, but he is as honest as the day is long. If he does not, he may be able to tell you someone who does.

If I had a valuable ring to sell, the last place I'd get a recommendation was on a website. Anyone here can plug their own business or a friend's and even though we live in a mostly nice town, there absolutely are people who will rip you off if given the chance.

That's why you need to start with an appraisal before you do ANYTHING. Try finding an IGE certified appraiser in town thru the IGE website. (Sorry, can't post links as I'm not a paid subscriber.) That website will tell you the average number of appraisals that are logged with IGE and that will tell you who really appraises in town vs those who say they appraise (in other words, a reputable jeweler vs a coin/jewelry dealer who popped up overnight, etc.)

Brombal wont give you the Real Value of your ring,he will want to get it as cheap as possible so they can make money on it. Get it appraised at a reputable place first before you try and sell it.

No one will give you the "real value" because all dealers need to buy below the price that they can sell it for--to get some idea of this, watch Pawn Stars--typical offer is about 50% of retail value.

An appraisal will tell you the insurance value, but not what you might get for it from a dealer--even an honest one. You can subtract the cost of the appraisal from what you'll end up getting from the sale.

Lots of interesting sugestions. First thing you should do is take the ring around to the most knowageable and top jewelry buyers , Patco, Brombal, Gillio, Silverhorn, Peggy's, Gaspar, and see not only what they would offer but actually get free info on your piece. Is it really valuable? If you feel you need an writen appraisal at this point be prepared to fork out at least $1-200.00 . The most reliable appraiser would be a member of the the American Gem Society. This way you are dealing with someone that only appraises jewelry and gems. Be up front and tell the appraiser that are thinking about selling the ring.
This appraisal would possibly help you sell the ring to a private party

Have the ring appraised first. Do not indicate you want to sell it. Then when the appraisal comes in you will have an idea of what you can sell it for. I have sold several valuable pieces through Peggy's in Carp. I had appraisals done, then later decided to sell. Fair.
