Roundabout Review
updated: Oct 18, 2012, 1:30 PM

Source: City of Goleta

Now that the roundabout at Los Carneros Road and Calle Real is operational, the City of Goleta wanted to provide a few tips about how to use this type of intersection.

A roundabout is an intersection where traffic travels around a central island in a counter-clockwise direction.

Vehicles entering the roundabout must YIELD to vehicles already inside the roundabout. All vehicles entering and exiting must yield to pedestrians.

When you approach a roundabout: • Slow down as you approach the roundabout.

• Yield to pedestrians crossing the roadway.

• Watch for signs and/or pavement markings that guide you.

• Enter the roundabout when there is a big enough gap in traffic.

• Drive in a counter-clockwise direction. Do not stop or pass other vehicles.

• Use your turn signals when you exit the roundabout.

• If you miss your exit, continue around until you return to your exit.

• Cyclists may choose to "take the lane" the same as a motorized vehicle or use the multi-use path. The Vehicle Code requires bicyclists who cross at crosswalks to walk their bicycles across the same as they would at any other intersection.

For more information and videos on how to use roundabouts, go to the City's Capital Improvement Project website at www.ProjectGoleta.com.
