I saw this "kitty" this morning, my boys insist it's a bobcat, but I'm not sure. Can anyone tell us what it is? Thanks!

OP here... I should have know the kids were right. They're pretty smart boys.

It caught me off guard... I went to look at the mountains to see how things were looking, then I glanced down and it was right there. It stared at me for a while then turned and trotted away. It was way bigger than any house cat I've seen before...

Anyway - we're at the end of Ward Drive. Wonder if all the heavy machine work across Atascadero creek scared it over to our neighborhood..

A bobcat, but according to many edhatters, it is a baby Mtn Lion!

What a lovely photo. Now, OP, get something pretty planted in that pot! (There is spray paint at OSH that you can use on plastic.) Make the landscape more inviting for butterflies/bees and your next bobcat visitor.

Don't ever corner it or let your dog chase it, beautiful but dangerous.

Nice shot! They are pretty shy animals. You surprised each other.

This time of year finds a lot of wild animals venturing into suburban areas looking for a drink of water or some food. Or a tiny dog - yum! JK - they won't eat your tiny dog. I think.

Bobcat giveaways are the short "bobbed" tail and the mane-like hair down by the throat.

I KNEW that fleabag alleycat was lying... I followed his directions... find a human house, make sure no human is around, look for a brightly colored plastic bowl, and there should be KIBBLE! I'm not seeing any kibble... uh oh, HUMAN! Oh... ok, well I can always make time for a photo, just make sure you get my tail in there...

Last time I saw a bobcat was on Doty's ranch, Winchester Canyon. We used to go to Doty's in the early 70s, to pick oranges. I stopped to let my Redbone hound run a bit next to the car. He flushed out a bobcat.

I am dead jealous that you not only got such a close up look, but the photo to prove it. Good job.

For anyone who is still reading these comments, the fur on a bobcat's cheeks is called "cheek ruffs." I always wondered. Finally looked it up.

115P you brought up such a good memory for me.. (op here).

We used to drive to Doty's in the early 70's too. Grabbed a brown shopping bag and headed in to to pick oranges.

I remember he would let us eat as many oranges as we wanted while picking them too. Perfect days!

We used to see so many deer back there, it was beautiful.

Good times!

We had a bobcat that often walked through our yard right next to the house, and even 'appreciated' the railroad pile steps that we had built up the hill behind us on Stanwood. He would walk up there like it was his, and his alone - sometimes stopping to look at us. Also, we often saw bobcats on the windy rte 192 in front of our house, and worried about their safety with cars on the curves.

Youre sooooo lucky! It's totally a Bobcat. Lokks like a pixie bob I used to have..except mine was really fluffy.

I live on Cima Linda. There is a beautiful Bob Cat that lives here too. Be careful, when I was away he killed my bengal Cat and partially ate him. I still miss my cat and I still see the Bob Cat in the neighborhood.

I am at the southern end of Patterson. A bobcat came onto the property during the day with lots of people around and carried off one of my chickens. It returned the favor by returning three weeks later to grab my favorite hen. I have three chickens left, so do the math and keep your pets locked up when my hens are all gone.
