- Vegetation Fire with Structures Threatened -
SANTA BARBARA, Ca. October 17, 2012 - At 7:46 am, the Santa Barbara County Fire Department (SBC
FD) responded to a vegetation fire with structures threatened, located at Highway 154 and Painted Cave.
SBC FD responded numerous resources to the incident. SBC FD was assisted by the US Forest Service,
Santa Barbara City FD, Montecito FD, Vandenberg FD, Cal Fire, California Highway Patrol and the Santa
Barbara County Sheriff's Department.
Resources assigned to the fire include 16 engines, 4 water tenders, 4 dozers, 4 hand crews with
4
additional crews ordered, 4 helicopters, and 2 air tankers. There has been one minor firefighter injury.
The fire is currently burning in a north easterly direction and is slope driven. The fire is
burning
in an
area that is steep, rocky and difficult to access. The fire is holding at 15 acres due to the fire bumping
up against a rocky outcropping and defensible space that was provided by home owners in the area. The
fire is currently a backing fire. Crews are providing structure protection and trying to establish control
lines. One concern is that the fire will move from a slope driven fire to a wind driven fire with the onset
of predicted afternoon winds.
Approximately 100 homes in the general area were threatened. Mandatory evacuations were
ordered
for 40 homes in the Painted Cave area. The evacuations were made through the reverse 9-11 system
along with Sheriff's Search and Rescue Teams going door to door.
Current weather is temperature in the mid 90's, moderate relative humidity, and breezy winds.
Gusty
winds to 20 mph are predicted this afternoon.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
