A man was struck and killed by a northbound passenger train Tuesday afternoon while he walked his
dog along the railroad tracks near La Conchita at the western edge of Ventura County.
The unidentified man tried to retrieve his dog from the tracks as the train approached, but he was not
able to get himself out of the way before being struck. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, but
the dog survived and returned to La Conchita on its own.
The engineer of the Amtrak Surfliner train initiated emergency procedures as soon as he saw the man
