SB Harbor Live Bait
updated: Oct 15, 2012, 3:00 PM

I just recently bought a fishing boat and have been very disappointed on the lack
of live bait available in the Santa Barbara Harbor. It's never consistent. Does
anyone know if there is anything going to be done to fix this situation?

Have you tried getting a hold of, "The Master-Baiter?" Seriously, though, the Tsunami took out the live bait barge in the Santa Barbara harbor. Google it to see the video.

Actually, the bait dock is fine. It just went for a little ride during the tsunami. Unfortunately, alcohol is a bigger priority for the bait dock guy than bait. As a liveaboard, I can tell you that most evenings around dusk, the macs and sardines will just about jump in your lap. And the sabiki comment is right on. Go get an "owner" brand sabiki bait rig, size 10 or 12, and come on down with a five gallon bucket. I pull 4 or 5 out at a time off the back of my boat.

And please be careful to not hook a pelican or gull or cormorant with that Sabiki. (681-1080 is the Wildlife Care Network number.) :) Good luck - good fishing!

He's usually only there on weekends, and even then, it helps to call the Sea Landing the day before and let them know you want bait the next morning. Join the SB Sportfishing club to meet the local sport fishing fleet and get answers to questions like this. Meetings are usually held the first Thursday of the month at 7:00 PM at the Westside Center 423 West Victoria St. Santa Barbara, CA.
