Dyson Vacuum Repair
updated: Oct 15, 2012, 11:31 AM

Where can I take my Dyson vacuum for repair? I have had horrible customer service with the new owner of Bob's Vacuum but I fear they're the only place to take it.

Places People Are Talking About:

Orcutt Vacuum

Not sure but I second the bad customer service there. I miss the older guys that worked there, they were great. The younger guy was really unhelpful.

A couple of years ago (guess it was still the older guys) I took my vacuum in for repairs. They had me bring the cansiter home and they kept the carpet attachment to fix. When I went to pick it up, they gave me the attachment from another vacuum (it was a different color).... when I protested, they looked at me like I was crazy. I just took it, figuring that if it worked I didn't really care what color it was. Turns out it had a *different* problem than the one I'd taken in. Fortunately, it was a cheap vacuum so rather than argue with them I just trashed it and bought myself a nice Meile from ANOTHER place.... there's a repair/sales shop on Chapala and the guy seemed nice enough.

You are right about Bob's vacuum...that place is now horrible.

I say get a REAL vacuum and get a Aerus (the original Electolux). They come to you to service the vacuum with excellent customer service. Be prepared to have an eye-popping experience when you see the cost but it is well worth the superior suction and longevity. It's all about suction my friend.

Orcutt Vacuum just before Santa Maria 937-6855. Might be
a long drive, but a scenic one. When I moved to SY, I bought a Sanitaire from them. Owned by a mom and her son, great
people and great service. Call them about the Dyson, if
they don't service them, they will tell you where to find help.

Call Dyson and ask for a recommendation in your area?
I think Sears sells them, maybe them repair them to? Is it under warranty?
I went to Bobs and found them very helpful--although they didn't work on my type of vacuum--they had good information.

The guy on Chapala hates the Dyson and I doubt he would work on it. But, he sells one of the best vacuums out there, The Miele.
I have a Dyson upright "DC 14 full kit"and I don't think it was worth the money... over $300 at Costco. Feels like I'm fighting with the vacuum cleaner... to extend that tube is a battle. It's not balanced right and it will tip over easily when using the attachments or when storing it. The edger doesn't work very well. It doesn't like a shag carpet and will not work on shag. If the cannister isn't cleaned out every time, the suction is definitly reduced, even though they say it isn't. I do like the old Oreck that I inherited, but I miss the self-propelled vacuum I had years ago. And, for quick clean-ups, I just bought a cordless Hand Vac Bissell model 5348-1 , at Bed Bath and I LOVE it. Light weight, removable hand vac, long charge, easy to use. Picks up good.

May be a bit of a stretch, but maybe give the appliance store a call to see if they can do a vacuum?

Right - Bob's is awful. Used to be really good. Now they are awful. Try Sears. They say they repair all appliances. Not sure how good they are, but you can at least phone and ask if they do them.

Bob's told me they make far more money fixing Dyson's than they do selling them. My line is: in that european accent, "at Dyson, we create solutions to problems that don't exist."

I just bought a new vacuum at Bob's a few weeks ago - the guy who was there basically told me that bagless was bad and Dyson was worse - he showed me the Dysons he had to repair and went on from there - very negative. I didn't want a Dyson or a bagless. I got the cannister vac I came in for (the off brand one - can't afford the Miele). I'm on the fence about it. Everyone I know who has a Dyson likes theirs - I would try their website or SB Vacuum (where I'm going to go next). Good luck.

What do you mean new owner? When was Bob's sold? I just got work done two weeks ago, and they talked about the possibility of being sold, but nothing was confirmed. I've had wonderful service and help from them for years, by the way.

My miele, the $450 version, lasted about 10 years. The hepa filters cost a small fortune. The auto cord rewind punked out (I fixed it myself). The motor needed some sort of rubber belt. I took it apart, went to Bob's, got the part and fixed it myself. Then the top of the machine (door to access tools) came unhinged. LIttle by little, it fell apart. And we sure as heck weren't abusing it, trust me.

The Chapala vacuum guy sold me used front rotor/suction part (don't know the name) when that motor started to fail. He repaired it a couple times over the years. (He's an okay guy. Timely repairs.)

Eventually, I got a Dyson off HSN or QVC. I LOVE IT. Suction like you wouldn't believe. LIghtweight. NO MORE BAGS. Filter easy to wash.

Granted, the tube part is a pain in the rump, but everyone in my house loves this vacuum. Can't be beat for sucking up pet hair, and rolls like a dream. EASY to dump dust/hair (we dig it into our garden). Dyson all the way.

Consumer reports rates several kenmores higher than Dyson in performance. That being said, I've fixed several Dyson's myself lately. They seem to have some pretty common problems, from just dirty filters (you know you need to wash them every few uses, right?) to clogs in the corrogated lines (use another vacuum to suck the clogs in reverse, so jammed brushes (remove, clean, reset the breaker with the little red button) to more complicated items like the many internal switches going intermittent, such as the one that enables the brushes when reclined.

I've heard that line before about vacuum repair guys saying they have more dysons to repair than other brands... however, how do we know there aren't just more people buying dysons and feeling like they are worth spending the money on to repair? (i.e. the cheaper vacuums aren't being repaired and not many people have the other expensive brands). We love our dyson. Yes, you do need to clean the filter at least every 3 months or it doesn't work as well.

Funny, Bob's was great to me within the last year when I had a problem; even took my number and called me when a certain type of used vac came in.
But more than ten years ago, I put my phone number on the check I used to buy my vacuum and the guy made a crack about my giving him my phone number... bad business/customer service. I've obviously never forgotten it. (This was back when it was common for businesses to ask for a #)

I have a Hoover model "Concept One" upright vacuum cleaner that I bought in 1976. Still works fine. I've only had to replace the drive belt 2 times; and put in fresh dust bags when they get full.

I've gone to the place on 635 Chapala St and they're about a B quality. The guy did a bad job on repairing the external attachment (put in a screw that's too short so there's no place to hang up the cord), but he did a splendid job on cleaning the vacuum hose and fixing the vacuum itself. I'd bring my Dyson there.

I also like the guy at Santa Barbara Vacuum
635 Chapala St. (Corner of Ortega) Quiet, efficient, honest.

He saved me money by repairing my old vacuum to get more time out of it. When I had to get a new one, he made a good recommendation for one within my budget, which I have had for years now. He has made a quick fix or two to it. Good man.

Yep - something's changed at Bob's. Went in recently to check out options and the guy (I think the new owner) was almost pushy about how all their products were super-duper.
Previously, the guys were not "Mr. Personality" but did great work!

We are Jennifer and mike, the owners of BOB' Vacuum. We are sorry that some Dyson owners are unhappy with the service we have provided. We repair about 12 Dysons per week and know that we cannot make everyone happy. Dyson's are expensive and people don't think they should have any problems with them. We know that some models are more reliable and some models always seem to have the same problems. We will continue to do our best to service Dyson's. We are a mom & pop local business and providing good service is very important to us. We are sorry when we fall short.

If you prefer a canister type vacuum, and don't need a load of bells and whistles, if value is the most important part of the equation, NOT impressing someone else with how much you spent, then consider the Eureka Sanitaire 3670 Mighty Mite vacuum.

I've owned mine for 5 years, definitely subject it to only light use, and NEVER abuse it in any way. The suction is second-to-none and it's a basic old-school style vacuum that is sturdy and reliable. You can spend over $120 if you're totally irresponsible, but it is available at under $60 at both WalMart and Amazon.

I figure if my Eureka broke down tomorrow, after 5 years of service, I would happily buy another for $60.00 and never once feel badly about not taking my hard-earned dollars to a vacuum repair service!

That's funny that you say Bob's is not helpful or friendly - I was just in there yesterday and the two men were both very helpful and kind.... I bought a vacuum from them about a year ago and had the same great service.... I kind of wonder sometimes if people have negative experiences from their own attitude when meeting people....

I recently purchased a vacuum from Bob's and could not be happier with the service I received or the product. This was about six months ago. I wonder if the OP might be more frustrated with the problems they were having with their dyson and Bob's wasn't able to give them the answer they wanted to hear. I finally purchased a Miele, and my only regret is not doing it three vacuums ago, when I went in to Bob's, checked them out, and concluded "too expensive!" Three vacuums later, hundreds of dollars later, I saw the light.
