Wool Carpet Cleaner
updated: Oct 15, 2012, 10:10 AM
I'd like recommendations for a cleaner for '80's Nepalese wool, vegetable-dye tiger rugs. Doesn't
necessarily have to be a business close to SB; LA area is fine, too.

My crazy husband used a garden hose, kiddie pool and some woolite for our rugs. Dried in the sun. They were very wrinkled but amazingly very clean and didn't seem to fade.

You could certainly do this at home, making a cold water soak in a bathtub with minimal swishing around (less disturbance for wool fibers) but I would use a milder soap than Woolite, which seems to remove color on some fabrics despite the "no bleach" label. (Or add dechlor, if you happen to have access to it, as used for fish in aquariums). I have had good luck with Murphy's oil soap, there are also specialty washes for handknits that add lanolin back into the wool. Drying a large item can be a pain, though. Roll carefully in large towels, dry flat out of the sun, etc. Or check with Star Rug cleaners or the folks at Rugs & More - both are quite reputable...
