Unfinished Wood Furniture
updated: Oct 14, 2012, 2:32 PM
A friend was asking if there are still
any places to buy unfinished wood
furniture in town since the wonderful
World of Wood at State/Anapamu
closed a couple years back? There
was also Good Land on Upper State
for awhile.

Depends on your budget. There are a few guys in the area that would probably build you something without finish from cheap to expensive. I know there was a shade tree carpenter on the corner of Carpinteria and I believe Soledad. Then there is the more high end - one guy you might ask is Joel Hoffman. If you look up his last name + furniture + dot com you can find his site.

There's an unfinished wood shop in Oxnard right off the freeway before Rose. Not sure about locally.

Every time we went past the "Unfinished Furniture" store I'd always make the 'dad-joke': "Unfinished furniture?? What kind of lazy carpenters own that place?? Chairs without backs, tables with three legs... just FINISH it already!!"

I would second Elliot's. While a bit of a drive to Ventura, they have a lot of samples at which to look.

I bought some unfinished cabinets about 5 years ago. At that time, I was told most of the manufacturers were going out of business. (the demand was still good though) Brook's Woodcraft has been a fixture of SLO since the 70's. Bought several pieces over the years for specific uses. Used to be Brooks would custom finish for you. Now the owners, two brothers, have moved into the second hand and antique furniture business, with a more limited line of unfinished furniture still for sale. Still on Santa Barbara St, near Broad. Has Beach House moved? Last time I looked it was a computer store.
