I need a recommendation to do an estate sale. I know an elderly couple
who is losing their house to foreclosure and it is beyond them to handle
selling [most of] their belongings. They would want someone who does
middle class sales, not high end. Thanks for any suggestions on who to
use.

Bernice Pagliaro (805) 967-2528. She is a kind caring person who will treat everyone with utmost respect and handle all the details. Call her and she will some out and take a look and give advice. I highly recommend her.

Very sad indeed. If they are able to do it, doing their own sale is the best idea. Please don't take a rec off Edhat. People shill their friends and own businesses and you can't trust an online rec. Please try to find a way to get a personal recommendation from someone in your circle of friends or local area. This kind of recommendation is virtually asking for vultures to come and fly in, sadly.

Let's all try to help them save their house! How would we go about that from Edhat? For elderly people to lose their house would be a tragedy. Then what happens to them?

We had a foreclosure in our neighborhood, very sad because a parental death, followed by severe illness of the other parent, were what caused house payments to get behind and the bank was fought unsuccessfully for two years. At the time I did think we acquaintances could have all pitched together and saved the situation, but I needed a template for the "let's all try to help them save their house!" Perhaps somebody could think-tank a written method of organizing such events for the future?

Really horrible for these folks. Usually, by the time we're elderly the house is paid for.

I agree with 051. We have so much in Santa Barbara, point us in the right direction to help an elderly couple. If we all gave up 1 latte a week, imagine the good we could really do....

What good would you do to the employees of Starbucks if you gave up one latte a week? Learn first why this "elderly couple" is facing foreclosure which on its face is an very odd consequence, unless there was some wrong-doing on their own part in this equation.

175, You might be right that there's some wrongdoing by the owners, but if you've been following the "robo-signing" story of the last few years then you'll know that many banks will stop at nothing to seize a house. This almost happened to my brother, and all it took was for him to miss two payments due to being unemployed and then DYING. By the time our family sorted the estate out (another month), it was very difficult to pull the house out of the foreclosure process, mostly because the bank (BofA) had built an almost impenetrable shield of offices that don't talk to each other and hired-gun attorneys whose only job is to seize as many houses as fast as possible. True story-- there is great evil in the mortgage system.

I'm sorry I forgot the name of the ladies' company. My experience was that when they came to inspect the estate and saw that I had it all packed up in boxes in the garage, they didn't want to do it and told me to hire city college kids. Their requirements were a house where they could stage things. My suggestion is Ebay, Craiglist. For the more expensive things put them on consignment. We staged our own garage sale in the driveway and had the whole family working on it. Publish no EBs, no early birds. Even when we did that we had a man show up a day before and ask to see all the wrought iron and paintings. People are strange. After a successful day we still had 2 van loads to take to Alpha.

The ladies at Clearing House are great, but they do take quite a high %. I'm sure most people who make this a business take a high %. It sure would be great if the neighbors and/or family could help this couple do it on their own. Go to change.org and start a petition to save their home. It works. Also, I recently refinanced under a federal program as I am retired and more "low income" than I used to be. I believe the acronym was "TAR"....not sure about that, but any mortgage banker would know. Very sad, regardless if it is "their fault"...

Why would this elderly couple refinance their home under any terms at this stage of their life, regardless of predatory lenders out there. Find that answer first then respond to what may or may not be a "sad" situation.

138, thanks for telling us what these folks did wrong. It's great that you know exactly what happened and how they were at fault. Good thing you still have your home and won't ever lose it by doing something as stupid as this thing that you know for sure they did....right? Sheesh.

@147, what happened with them? I'd love to get an honest background on people who get negative comments here. If there's a real reason to avoid these people, at least give us a heads up as to why so we're not left thinking it's some disgruntled neighbor or something. You don't have to go into personal detail, but if you were overcharged, if they didn't show up or if they skipped town or something, just say it!

OP here: Thanks for the helpful suggestions. I don't know a lot about the situation except they have had family and financial hardships (daughter committed suicide years ago, both have health issues) and they have been in their house for some time. They also knew it was coming as they couldn't afford the payments and knew it would go in this direction. It's too late to have others "help" buy the house but I like some of the creative suggestions here. The wife has a pretty good attitude about it considering the situation. They will be living at a friends house until they can figure out what to do, and they are not completely destitute. I may end up doing the garage sale for them but I don't really want to take this on. Thanks again to those of you who made good recommendations.

Follow up to the person who questioned the refs here: Having known Christa & Bernice for years, I would personally hire either one of them to do a sale for my family. There ARE others in the business who I've known as long who I would NOT recommend.
