101 SB Castillo offramp is where the dog is. CHP and Animal control on scene. Earlier 1100 Block of Anacapa or Garden there was a report of an 1144 Dog or dead.

I just talked with the dog owner, who is quite distraught. That was her dog that was killed on the freeway. She lives in Samarkand and the dog escaped. She has three dogs.

These calls are Gut wrenching poor little guy got confused and ran on the freeway alot of dogs run into traffic. I feel like I have to post it just in case someone that loves them wants to know. I would want to know.

What I don't understand is why people don't stop to help. I saw a dog in the middle of the 10 freeway in San Bernardino and stopped to help even though my dog was in the car. People were flying by me and not one person stopped to help and most didn't even slow down. I was so glad I was able to get the dog to come to me. He was a really sweet old guy that didn't deserve to be killed on the freeway (a really horrible way to go). The CHP were happy to help me get the dog to the the local animal control who contacted the owner. They were very thankful to get their dog back in one piece. If you can help please do so the next time you see a dog in need.

Who ever hit that dog should go to prison! Every other driver that passed by without stopping to aide the dog should be fined $1,000. Dogs are people too!

@764 - That's a really good thing, but extremely dangerous for everyone on the freeway. That could have caused a huge pile-up and lost lives of many. Last week, I was in a similar situation on Mission st, between De La Vina & the Freeway, I stopped and put on my flashers. Everyone around stopped also, as they could see the small dog darting, in & out of the street. Luckily that had a happy ending for the 98yr old owner. In this case, the owner said that the dog was very skiddish, afraid of people and cars. But, it's still very sad and I was in tears talking with the dog owner, she was beside herself with grief and could barely speak. She was grateful that I had called her and told her what was posted on Edhat.

@769 ~~ Either you are trying to be funny, or, you are being totally ridiculous. It would have been extremely dangerous to suddenly slam on your brakes on the freeway, to attempt to avoid a dog running around scared. Even if someone had pulled-over to try and get the dog, it was unlikely the dog would have cooperated, since it was scared of people and cars. (reluctantly saying this ~) Who, exactly is at fault here????

That's very very nice of you, D8Vanilla - I hope that I would be strong enough to do similarly, to call, that is. How very sad for the owner --- and tough for the driver, too. Keep an eye on your pets and try to make sure that they won't escape. (Having a little dog who longs to run free, I know how difficult that is!)

Sometimes you just can't stop. It doesn't mean you don't care. One morning several years ago I was on my way to work. I left the East Beach heading up Milpas to get on the freeway. Traffic was horrendous; wall-to-wall cars. Suddenly from my right (near the wine store) a dog ran out into traffic. I slammed on my brakes but hit the dog. I remember screaming "Oh my god, oh my god" over and over." The dog continued to run across the street toward the gas station The person in the next lane (the left one that was headed toward the beach) also hit the dog. It still ran, and just barely, by a couple of inches, missed being hit a third time! Then it ran into the store at the station where about four homeless men were standing. I couldn't see anything else. But I was so upset I began sobbing. Then I took a breath. I forced myself to calm down; I couldn't afford to cause an accident. But I cried for days afterward because there was nothing I could have done or do. It was awful, and I feel for the owner of this dog.

Over the years, I have rescued more then a few stray dogs. Sometimes the owners are grateful, sometimes they are very defensive re: how their dog came to be out on the streets. (BTW D8VANILLA---thank you for all your good deeds.) Just two days ago, I had my friend's dog tethered, and she had access through my open front door. My neighbor's cat, who spends 1/2 his time in my yard, must have walked across the top railing of my front porch. Next thing I knew, the collar was empty, the dog obviously having jumped up onto the railing and got hung up by the leash. Luckily, she was able to get out of her collar. She then had chased the cat back to his property. "Who is at fault ?" is a good question. My friend's dog nearly died, the search for this missing dog was traumatic. If not for my neighbors' cat . . . My point is, sometimes you don't have control over every little thing. I thought I had taken every precaution to keep my friend's dog safe. My pal doesn't read Edhat, so he will never know how his precious little girl nearly met a gruesome end. He would be a basketcase if I told him. With so many dogs (and cats and other animals) getting onto the 101, it is too bad there is no way to keep them from running up or down those ramps. I wish all of us could be better drivers, and care more about keeping animals safe. My heart goes out to the owner(s) of this dog who ended up on the highway. The whole thing is just too sad and awful.

769, I doubt very much that whoever hit the dog did so intentionally. Accidents do happen. My wife's co-worker was hit and severly injured by a car yesterday on his bike and the woman didn't even stop until she was pulled over a few miles away. She was only cited for leaving the scene of an accident - no prison time. What happened to this poor dog was terrible but it was not intentional.

Was that a grey Pitt Bull AMARA? I didn't know anyone hit it..I saw it run thru traffic I was walking toward Cacique and this big Pitt rounded the corner started growling at me showing teeth I got out of his way..He just ran right into traffic people were stopping all over. Maybe I show have posted it but by the time I turned and got to my driveway that dog was over the RR Tracks and he looked like he was running OK. I can't recall ever seeing the dog before..

D8VANILLA, I also appreciate what you did. As awful as this is for the owner, knowing what happened is better than not knowing. I still dream about a cat that went missing in 1993. Even though we put up signs, asked around the neighborhood and filed a report at the shelter, we never found her or knew what had happened to her.

I don't know, Roger. It was so sudden. Literally the dog came out of nowhere. It seems to me now it was medium-sized and short-haired, dark fur. But it happened so fast. I find it hard to believe the dog survived for long after two hits by moving cars. If it did, I hope it got medical help.

I'm absolutely heartbroken reading this. The poor dog. My heart goes out to the owners who loved this dog so much and whose lives will never be the same knowing their baby's life ended this way. Just a tragedy all around and I'm so sorry it happened.

I saw the whole thing unfold. I was in the fast lane of 101 North right before the Mission offramp. The dog came running from the direction of the offramp. A man was running behind the dog. They both started running into oncoming traffic on the 101. ! The man was running and waving his arms above his head like crazy!!! I called 911. They transferred me to CHP which was BUSY!! So 911 came back on and said they had all the details. THERE IS NO WAY ANYONE COULD OF STOPPED FOR THAT DOG. You don't expect a dog to come running at you head on. Whoever the man was who was RUNNING into oncoming 101 traffic is a HERO and deserves an award. I don't know how he didn't get hit. I have never seen a dog run that fast before. This is so sad. I feel so sad for all involved!!

Losing pets is always a hard thing to do. My fur baby has cancer, and is on borrowed time and it is very hard for me to even think about it. Her passing will be very peaceful, and I fear that this doggy's passing was not. My heart goes out to the owner of the dog and those that were involved in trying to rescue it. It couldn't be easy to be the people who hit the animal. I don't know if I could live with that.

I wonder if the man that was chasing the dog is what scared the dog enough to run into traffic. It's hard with dogs that are skittish! :( So sad for the owners. I lost a dog when I was a teen because he followed one of my brother's friends home and then somehow ended up on the freeway, where he was struck. Heartbreaking still and that was over 20 years ago :(

No. He was trying to save the dog. The dog was running full speed before he got to the freeway. The man was a selfless human being.

I feel sad for the owner. I feel especially sad for the poor person who was going 65+ down the freeway not expecting to see a dog. I hope that person is physically OK. I know they can't be OK emotionally. And why would CHP 911 be busy?

Can't believe someone would call for prison for hitting a dog on the freeway. The number 3 lane on a freeway is not a dog run. There's no one to blame, just a sad accident that happens in the life. The driver most likely feels horrible, the owner of the dog feels horrible, the rest of us feel bad about it, the dog is unfortunately deceased. Why look for someone to blame? Solves nothing, creates animosity. I'll say it again, license the dog owners, not saying the owner of this dog did anything wrong, just that a lot of people do let their dogs run around loose and this could, hopefully won't, happen, to their dog. For a driver this is a nightmare. You can't slam on the brakes, a normal reaction, in the fast lane when the guy behind is less than a car length away. Tailgaters read this- stop it now and back off.
