Can anyone recommend a hostel or extended stay in the Santa Barbara and Ventura areas?

Check CraigsList under "Vacation Rentals." Use both the Santa Barbara and the Ventura CL sites as they are separate. Under "Search for" put in the name of the city to get returns on just those for that place. You'll find all price ranges from rooms in private homes to massive estates, and from one night to longer term. But if you have a specific price in mind (such as less than $100 per night) you can also narrow it down that way.

If you can wait a few more years (maybe longer) until Fess Parker's project or La Entrada get built, both of those, I believe, were originally supposed to include hostels.

The Tourist Hostel across the track from the train station is privately run and has restrictions. They have a website.
