UCSB Cell Reception
updated: Oct 09, 2012, 12:00 PM
By Edhat Subscriber
An Edhat reader wants to know if anyone else is having trouble with their cellphone coverage near the
UCSB area. My phone is constantly searching and in roaming mode. 1 bar is really bad! Is this just a Sprint
problem? Just a problem with my phone? Rebooting / turning airplane setting on & off haven't helped.

Ellwood dweller here - my home is the Bermuda Triangle of cell reception. I literally need to walk half a block from home for consistent reception.

I am pretty sure that if you had 100 users all with the same phones on the same service, at least 25% of them would claim their reception sucked, 25% would say their service was excellent and the other half would say "eh, it's about the same".

I live in Ellwood and I have Sprint and I'm currently getting full signal. Try powering your phone off and back on, or going into the phone's settings and selecting "Update PRL" if you can.

I've found that reception gets spotty during the 10 minutes before the hour when the UCSB students get out of class, and each one of them immediately gets on their phone, thereby overloading the local cells. Try making your calls during class time.

No doubt about it, it IS a capacity problem. When I worked at UCSB my cell phone worked fine during the summer and quarterly breaks. When classes were in session the number of users would overwhelm the systems. Not that the providers didn't try to install enough capacity; rather just too many users for that capacity.

I have had a recent reduction in the quality of ATT performance in the San Roque area.
