October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and Montecito Firefighters will be
adding a little pink to show solidarity for the cause. You will see our
firefighters and staff donning the traditional pink ribbon, or a uniform shirt
with pink accents to promote breast cancer awareness. Additionally, all
responding fire equipment will be affixed with magnetic pink ribbons.
This will mark the second year that the District has participated in the
national initiative.
"Breast cancer has touched our fire family more than once in the past," said
Fire Chief Chip Hickman, "and I am proud to support this annual event."
According to the American Cancer Society, in 2011 it was estimated that 230,480
new cases of invasive breast cancer would be diagnosed among women, and
approximately 39,520 women were expected to die from breast cancer.
The Navy and pink shirts will be on sale for $15 to the public. The Montecito
Firefighter's Charitable Foundation (MFCF) will be donating $700 to the Santa
Barbara Cancer Center. The MFCF will also be accepting donations on behalf of
the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
