Stingrays at Beaches
updated: Oct 08, 2012, 12:02 PM

By Edhat Subscriber

Over the summer it seems like we had a lot of stingrays due to warm water. Have the stingrays started to leave because of colder temperatures?

They don't leave when the water gets colder, we do, therefore less sting ray incidents.

I'm on the water all the time and I have never heard of or seen stingrays in the area. The water never got very warm this year.

People just don't know how to walk in the water...shuffle people and you won't get stung. Adapt to the wildlife's enviornment..and you won't have a problem.

339, so all those signs I saw on Carp beach in August were because people got stung by. . . bees?

Its the batray shuffle, good idea year round but especially in the spring and summer. They mostly move into deeper water when the temps cool off and they finish spawning. But there are ALWAYS some in shallow. The water did get much warmer this year than last year and probably the last 5 years.

Last week I walked out onto Stearns wharf to where the water starts and the waves were breaking, and saw at least a dozen rays and some babies swimming around in the shallows. Hadn't seen that before.

Water still very warm out there, close to 65 which is a nice August temperature. I'd still shuffle those feet for another month or so.
