updated: Oct 08, 2012, 9:20 AM
My son would like a custom built skateboard for his birthday. Where is the best local place to get one for
him?

Church of Skatan. Just go in and tell them you want to order a custom skate. If you want to save some money and add convenience, Google "warehouse skateboards" and do it all online.

Try Powell-Peralta, a local company. You can make your own skateboard online! Here is the link... http://www.skateone.com

Play It Again Sports or Vans. Had a girlfriend die on a little scooter.... So I'm not sure those are safe either. Just make him always wear a HELMET!!!

Surf Country in Goleta. Doug won't give you the cool-guy skate/surf shop vibe, I'm seen him very friendly and helpful to moms trying to hook their kids up, and doesn't oversell them.

You do not and cannot MAKE your son wear a helmet. You SUGGEST that he wear one. And when your son hits 13 or 14 he will take it off whenever you are not looking, guaranteed.

278. Thanks. I was laughing out loud (derisively) at 221 and LOUWHO?'s comments. I'm a nearly 60-year-old female and even I know that is is UNCOOL to wear a helmet while skating. Witness the skateboard park (Cabrillo Blvd) kids, who are all scofflaws. When was the last time you saw a kid out on the street (State St. environs) wearing a helmet? Hahahahahaha.

Helmet is a must for a youngster until they learn some balance and can navigate on the board. And yes, they'll ditch it when they get a little bit older.

Find out what kind of board/components he wants, as boards/parts do vary. Certain decks/trucks/bearings/wheels are different than others. Not necessarily better or worse, but different. Might be beneficial to either have him make a parts list or just bring him down there to build it. I know you can't really have the same element of surprise, but if you are going to be dropping some good money on a board, I'd make sure its something he wants. I like Doug at Surf Country as well, he's a nice guy.

There will be a guy at the Surf Fest (Saturday 10/20) who does custom skateboards. He's from about an hour south of here so if you want local, try Doug at Surf Country. He'll get you a referral if he can't help you.
