Officer Involved Shooting
updated: Oct 06, 2012, 10:01 AM

Source: Santa Barbara Sheriff's Department

One suspect is in critical condition today following an officer involved shooting that occurred early Saturday morning after deputies responded to a call for shots fired.

Shortly before 3:00am Sheriff's dispatch received several 911 calls from the area of Andrita Street and Rosemead Street, reporting multiple gunshots heard as well as subjects seen fleeing the area. Deputies conducting a vehicle stop close to the incident heard the gunshots and immediately responded. When deputies arrived in the 4700 block of Andrita Street they saw a male subject standing in the front yard of a residence holding a handgun. The subject confronted the deputies and that is when several shots were fired striking the suspect. The suspect was taken to Cottage Hospital in critical condition.

A large search of the area, which included a County Air Support helicopter and the Special Enforcement Team (SWAT), was conducted to locate any other possible suspects and victims. A reverse 911 call went out to area residents advising them to stay in doors while deputies completed the search. Several people in the area have been detained and are currently being questioned.

The Santa Barbara Sheriff's Office will handle the investigation as detectives determine the circumstances of the incident, including how many shots were fired and by whom.

Due to the early stage of the investigation there is no other information being released at this time.
