Santa Barbara High School is having a all day concert today. It's so loud its
shaking my house. Has anyone else been affected by this? Several
neighbors have called the school with zero effect. While I understand the
idea of giving something fun to the students, does it need be so loud to
negatively impact the residents?

Got to the beach, take a hike or go for a bike ride so you won't have to worry your head about what's going on at the high school. If this was ongoing I could see a problem but a once in a wild moon?? Where's your civic tolerance and acceptance? It's okay once in a while to just swallow your pride and what you expect to have happen and just let happen what is going on around you.... even if you don't approve of it or even like it.

I seriously doubt the entire high school suspended classes for an "all day" concert of any kind. I went to SB High back in the 90's and our band played at lunch a couple times (garage band, not marching) but that was only for 1/2 an hour.

Agreed. We live in a city. Considering all the noise from the freeway, trains, motorcycles with loud mufflers, sirens, and just general city noise, I wouldn't think that loud music, in the middle of the day, would be something to get worked up about. Our city has community events, and we should all be glad that it does. Especially when they involve arts such as music. Tap your feet to the beat and try to enjoy, or at least endure! Peace out.

Try living near Alameda Park. Every weekend my neighborhood is full of noises from people partying, which I don't mind so much - except for the male CLOWN a few weekends ago who was amplified and speaking Spanish in a cartoon character voice, along with his woman sidekick…it went on for about 4 hours and was TERRIBLE! The thing that bothers me about the constant events at the park – both private and public - is the trash that people leave behind. It blows around the park and into the neighborhood for days after everyone has gone home. I feel for the people who live near Oak Park for the same reasons. Music at the high school for one day seems pretty minor.

Today just reinforced my decision to vote NO on measures A2012 and B2012. The schools haven't received the taxpayer message, the teachers aren't teaching, so they'll not be getting another dollar of my taxes until they shape up.

539: I'm interested; explain. What happened today that influenced your decision? And what makes you say the teachers aren't teaching? Every teacher that i personally know, teach with every ounce of their heart, even buying their own school supplies for the students because their budgets are so low. More details please!

551 it was far longer than two periods as they seemed to do sound checks and rehearsals, didn't bother me because it had cooled down today and could close a window but it was most of the day.

539.....hey the sky is blue maybe that can be reason for you to vote against those two measures and feel good about it, or today is Wednesday. Honestly, if the school having some kind of music, there is a reason for it, and the teachers are not the reason. For the record, all teachers took a 7day furlough (that is more unpaid time in addition to the 10 weeks of furlough in the summer) instead of raising class sizes to compensate for the budget cuts made by the state and federal governments. The teachers will not do this again, and the next cuts will directly raise class size...so just know that when you vote against the props, you are voting for class sizes of 35-42 guaranteed. Im sure that a music concert is a perfect reason to legitimize your decision....

On the contrary, if measures A2012 and B2012 passed, maybe schools wouldn't have to accept money from corporations or play host to concert events underwritten by "retail giants".

As a teacher in the nearby area, the noise gave my students a reality check on how hard it is to concentrate with that type of music blaring in the background. It was loud, and it seemed long- 10 something til past noon. Weird time for a rock concert/scream fest on a school/work day. Imho.

@Tracy Prop 47 (2002) 13 billion to "fix our aging schools" Prop 55 (2004) 12 billion to "relieve overcrowding and repair older schools" Prop 1D (200) 20 billion "to relieve overcrowding and build new classrooms and earthquake retrofit" (i.e "repair our aging schools"). How is it possibly after 45 billion dollars that we still have overcrowding? Despite the so-called cuts in education, 40% of the State Budget is mandated to education. Add in the Lottery, local bond measures, and all those realty companies, grocery chains, and banks telling us how they are donating x% of their money to "help our poor schools." Something is desperately wrong here and tossing more money at schools has certainly been proven not to be the solution.

I heard it as well, it was not "all day" though it was rather loud. What bothers me though is that SBHS has no problem having exceptionally loud football games that go well past 10PM but if any artist at the bowl does such a thing, they are fined.

Permanent damage to hearing starts at 85 decibels. You can download a noise app on smartphones to check the decibel level yourself.

Taxes are an all-time low, Obama gave us all rebates, government spending is the lowest for decades. Schools are underfunded, especially in California which is 49th in the nation in per student spending. Wages are stagnant because the entire benefit of increases in productiivity over the last 20 years have gone to the top 1%, whose net worth has skyrocketed. Sadly, people vote against their own interests, then rail at the lousy results and vote against their own interests yet again. While we shrink our investment in our future, countries like China are eating our lunch.

HELLO! The varsity football games start at 7 p.m. They are over by 10 p.m. ....get a grip and maybe you all should enjoy being near such a fantastic educational institution and support your community schools. Did someone mislead you when you moved into the neighborhood? Did you not notice the school? Do you hate people under 18? What?

Fixing aging schools..the money goes to infrastructure not classrooms or teachers. That money went to try to make the schools up to code..and was super costly. Obviously you are good at using stats, how about providing an audit of how the money was spent?
