Fire Prevention Week
updated: Oct 03, 2012, 11:27 AM

Source: Santa Barbara County Fire Department

October 3, 2012 - October 7th-13th has been declared "National Fire Prevention Week", a time to reflect on our nation's past fire history, remembering the "Great Chicago Fire of 1871" and how, out of that tragedy, a national interest in fire prevention and safety emerged.

The 2012 National Fire Prevention Week theme "Have 2 Ways Out!" is a reminder that every family needs to determine two ways of escape from each room in the home, from the home itself, and to practice the plain order to be prepared in case of fire.

There are a variety of things that you can do now that will help your family in the event of fire:

• Install and maintain smoke alarms

• Make a map of your home. Mark a door or window to be used to get out. Do this in every room

• Choose a meeting place outside were everyone will know to meet

• Write down the number for your fire department on your escape plan (911)

• Have a grown-up sound the smoke alarm and practice your escape plan with everyone living in your home

• Keep your escape plan on the refrigerator and remind grown-ups to have your family practice the plan twice a year

The Santa Barbara County Fire Department reminds people that the reality is that when fire strikes, your home could be engulfed in smoke and flames in just a few minutes. It is important to have a home fire escape plan that prepares your family to think fast and get out quickly when the smoke alarm sounds.
