Donation Pick-up
updated: Oct 03, 2012, 10:35 AM

We're moving this weekend and have accumulated some very usable things that we no longer need and don't want to move. They would be appropriate for a garage sale, thrift store or craigslist but we don't have the time or desire to make trips to deliver them. I thought it was commonplace for the various thrift shops to pick up but I'm finding that is not categorically so. I also thought that contacting agencies 1 week ahead would be enough but I am incorrect there too. Any suggestions? We already have our hands full moving the things we do want. I'd leave them out in front of the house until we are able to arrange a pick up but that seems rude to our neighbors, especially since we'll already be gone.

Where can we arrange for a pick up before the end of the week?

The local roller derby team the Brawlin' Betties are having a rummage sale soon and are looking for stuff. You could email them or shoot them a message on Facebook & see if they are interested in the kind of stuff you have. I don't know about the thrift store pick ups, but this might be another option for you.

Santa Barbara Freecycle (sbfreecycle) is a Yahoo group that is just for this type of thing.

People post messages listing items to be picked up for free.

Sorry can't post a link but go to Yahoo groups and search.

A couple of months ago I was in a real bind and had to find someone to come to Mission Cyn within a few days. I tried Alpha and Catholic Charaties but they had a week or two delay. Destined for Grace, a local non-profit that helps with childhood education to impoverished communities and countries came out within a day or two and took my stuff. I'd give them a call - the # for pick up is 619-0649.

We just put what we didn't want on curb saying free. And by the end of the day most of it was gone. Alpha Thrift is great for the write-off but they are choosy.

You could always list on Edhat classifieds and say free for those who come to pick it up.

331-You are seriously misinformed if you think Alpha is in any way greedy. Alpha Resource Center provides an abundance of services to the developmentally disabled and their families. These services are not free and with decreasing state and federal funding to these types of funding the costs are going way up. The thrift stores finance these programs in part. Please go to Alpha and learn about all they do before judging.

What's wrong with Craig's List? Just put up a picture, say that it's yours for free if you come pick it up, and as long as the stuff is as usable as you say, I'll guarantee it will be gone within a day..tops.

I noticed a sign at Peabody Charter School advertising their rummage sale on October 6. Give them a call - a parent might be willing to pick up your donation.

@331 - I totally agreee with you that Alpha is greedy. They get everything for FREE and sell for really high prices. And, isn't that Wings for Love, does not benefit local???
The Goodwill Store on Carrillo, used to have good resale prices, (not sure now). Do the curb alert and list in the Free section on Craigslist.org . Most of it will be gone within a day. The rest you can always call the garbage people for the free one-time pickup.

Those of us who know, agree; Put it at the curb. Put "FREE!" signs on it. Put ad on Craigslist: "FREE: Usable Stuff." Put your address. Done, done and done.

Alpha Thrift. For the amount of money those stores make, the developmentally disabled should be living like kings and queens. Where does all that money go, I wonder?

And don't tell me Alpha is so altruistic. I know people who used to work at the stores. Someone is making a pot full of money off donated goods. And the prices now are ridiculous. It's not greed, it's sheer thievery.

Alpha, Greedy? You know besides running a thrift shop they do a hell of a lot of good. Go look up Katie's FUNd. I'm sure the extra two dollars goes along way.

Maybe greedy isn't the word for Alpha. Choosy, very choosy. When my mother in law passed away, we had a houseful of furniture, kitchen items, clothing, bedding, etc. Alpha said they would pick up but they didn't mention they would pick through it all and leave about half of it behind scattered about. Apparently, if they can't get top dollar in resale, they don't want it and don't have anyone to give it away to.

Craigslist can be a pain if you have to meet all those people at your house to have them look at stuff and decide if they want it.

PLEASE don't put it on the curb for FREE. This is such a waste. People do it in my neighborhood a lot and the stuff sits for days, getting wet and damaged and then no one wants it or will come get it. Except the garbage trucks. It's lazy, ugly and irresponsible.

"If they can't get top dollar in resale . . ." Go check out any of the Alpha Thrift shops. Stuff is stacked so high and deep, it is impossible to sift through it all. Some of the prices on used junk is higher than if you go to buy it brand new. Alpha is the quintessential price gouger.
Cut out the middle man and put ad out for free stuff, stack it at the curb. We're not talking about saggy sofas and ancient television sets. Make some peoples' day and let them haul it away for you. No rain in sight.
