Scanner Reports 10-3-12
updated: Oct 03, 2012, 7:00 AM

By Roger the Scanner Guy

Happy Wednesday Hump Day. To some just another work day for others, like 81 year old Antonia Becerra, of Glendale who got her life savings ripped off in a lottery scam and has to keep working to survive. I read her story in the LA Times on Sunday. Could you imagine the horror of something like that happening to you? You save all your life; a buck here, there, you make it to retirement then get nailed by a thief. Some people have no conscience. They don't care that someone worked hard all their life saving every penny to make ends meet. They just want to take everything they got then leave them with nothing. A lot of people would give up at this point; not this gal she is still working 3 days a week at the same job she's had over 40 years. The Glendale Police Department is helping her out by collecting donations to help Antonia to get her life back on track.

I read dozens of these stories each week but I get real angry when I read or hear of people abusing the elders. It reminds me of Santa Barbara the Capital of Elder Abuse after what happened here a few years back in one of our Nursing homes. People say that the Nursing home abuse case changed lives, Elders gained more rights, and nursing homes were forced to become more accountable. Organizations protecting the elders sprouted up all over. I had a friend whose mother was abused here in Santa Barbara she went to all of those organizations and all they did was refer her to other organizations. She went the official route not much was done there either. My take on things that occur like this in Santa Barbara is that the abuse is discovered, uncovered, and then covered back up only better than before. The only service provided to victims is Lip Service, from what I have seen concerning Elder Abuse. It really burns me up when I witness the horror of Elder Abuse like I did a few years ago when that poor old woman was tossed out of the Shelter on the street.

Seems like almost every time I go across the street to Circle K the shelters security guard shows up. Sometimes when I'm walking back from the Post Office I notice another staff member I'll call Spanky because that is who he looks like walking behind me and laughing what a bunch of Bozos. I mean Come On don't they have anything better to do than follow people around they don't like in an attempt to intimidate? I don't feel intimidated by Elder Abusers so good luck with that. I think people who abuse the Elderly and disabled are Scum of the Earth. It sure is sad. Sad for the homeless who have nothing and are trying to better themselves, and sad for the people that let it happen. Kinda funny a neighborhood activist told me last week that every time she went to Circle K, the shelter guard shows up I thought she was a little nuts, then I noticed the same thing happening to me. I don't mind being nuts especially if these people consider themselves to be sane I really don't want their brand of sanity. The next time I see something like that happening in my neighborhood I'm going to document the HELL out of it. I will also call the other shelters here in town and attempt to get the person a place to stay there. I hope I could count on someone here in Santa Barbara to help. It really is a shame that we treat our poor elderly that way.
