Gardener
updated: Oct 02, 2012, 8:43 AM

I need a good gardener who can remove 12 feet of ivy from palm trees. If you know someone or a team that is reliable, honest and relatively reasonable in price, I'd appreciate having your comments and names and phone #s.

Cut the ivy trunk stem(s) a critical point and let it die, so you can later pull down the dead ivy tendrils.

My husband can do it. He happens to be off work today and he has the equipment/tools needed to do the job. He is english speaking only, I hope that's not a deal breaker. Feel free to call him anytime. His name is Bob and he has local references. Home 805-3181917 or 661-510-1239 work cell.

I can't answer your plea, but here's my two cents worth. Ivy has got to be one of the most useless landscape plants around: no flowers, no fruit, just a mass of green that the rats like to live in. Good for you to tear it down. I used to trim mine until one fine morning I woke up with a major rash. Told my husband "either you trim it or you get rid of it." Goodbye, ivy!

How about Morning Glory's? Anybody got some good ideas on how to get rid of them?

326843: does your husband do general pruning? I have some large overgrown jasmine along a fence and the corner of my house, as well as a dead tree that needs to be cut back; couple of hours work, but beyond my tools.

Two laborers could do it if you give them good direction and have someone steady the ladder, assuming you have the tools for cutting on hand. Try craigslist.

As for morning glories....personally I just keep digging them out, over and over again.

I highly recommend Luciano Garcia at Brother's Gardening. 805 698-7534

He has a great team of gardeners who will do any job, big or small. Very reasonably priced also. He does all of our gardening at our house and our apartment building downtown. I've used other gardeners, but these guys I'm sticking with. Honest and hardworking. Hope that helps.

845. I spend a lot of man hours yanking ivy out of my yard, on east and west sides. Both neighbors haven't got a clue about ivy, couldn't care less. They both have weekly gardeners, but ivy is allowed to invade my land.

I must disagree with you on the "no flowers" part of your comment, however. Older ivy, once established and, if not pruned back, has lots of flowers that the bees seem to enjoy.

That said, I really really really don't like ivy.

And morning glories are pretty, but a lot of work to dig out. It is amazing how many flower catalogues still sell the seeds for invasive and rampant growth plants. I even saw one advert selling seeds for castor bean plants!

Classic - there is a need and there are people willing to fill it. This is how you create jobs. Demanding the government give people jobs is not.

I'm sure I'll get flamed, but immediately after you cut the ivy be sure to spray the newly cut roots with roundup. Don't dilute it and use a brush if you don't have a sprayer. There is a place for roundup and ivy is one of them (also morning glory, pampas grass and other invasives). Ivy will grow back no matter how much you try to dig it out unless you spray it.

My son at Tyler's Gardening. He will do an amazing job and at a resonable price. He's young, responsible, and highly motivated. And he takes a lot of pride in his work. You can reach him at:
