I'm thinking of joining Curves and am wondering how women like the local
Curves franchise. Googling "Curves complaints" brings up complaints about
billing practices at other franchises (not the Santa Barbara franchise).

10% of Curves profits from the national chain are donated by the founder Gary Heavin to anti-choice groups. If that is OK with you, then go for it.

The noise level at the Goleta Curves is over the top for me. I can go there for free because it is covered by my insurance, but the noise level turned me away.

080P, snopes.com has a very interesting take on the 10% of profits from Curves and where they go. Makes me stop and think, though. Do I want to support a business that supports issues with which I strongly disagree? Thanks for the info and making me more aware.

The one time in my life I joined a gym, it cost me $400 for one year. About 2 weeks after writing the check, the business went out of business, and I never saw a penny of my money back. Walking is much more fun anyway, especially if you've got a dog! Just walk.

@OLDLAWOMAN, that is awful when that happens, and it seems like it's increasing as businesses of all types seem to be going under very quickly. Walking, though, isn't enough for everyone, sadly. It's excellent, I agree. But sometimes we need a bit more.

Whatever you decide to do, stick with it. The first time I got on a stairmaster, I set it for 10 minutes of the lowest level. Made it 5 minutes and had to take a break. Did another 3 or 4 minutes, then went home. But I went back. And again. And again. Within a year, my regular cardio workout started with 100 floors which is where it stayed, more because of the amount of time it took than hitting a wall.

Curves is great. But i had amazing amazing results at the medizone, now run by Dr.Duncan Turner. I lost over 30 pounds with his program in just 3 months. You must call i refered a friend and I hear they are running a fall speacial. (almost 1/2 off what i paid :( ) But still worth every penny. best of luck DR TURNER/MEDIZONE 805-962-1957

I was a member of Curves at Hollister & Patterson for several years. I found, over time, service declined due to an absentee owner and frequent staff changes. Also, you have to enjoy LOUD music while you exercise. Ultimately, I found it monotonous. I joined the YMCA for a variety of choices. I'm happier there. I also was bothered by where the profits were going at Curves.

Try Killer B Fitness - only a few blocks from Curves. It's the best! You will get in such great shape, there are many classes to choose from, and the people (owner, trainers, clientele) are really fun to be around. All shapes, ages, and sizes get a great workout. There is a new 90-day fitness and/or weight loss challenge starting on Monday, so try to go in for a free trial class on Monday. The workouts will take you much farther than Curves ever will, but you can start as slow as you need to. Many people I have met there say they are in the best shape of their lives, or best since college/high school. Do it! Signed, a happy customer.

My daughter and I joined Curves a few years ago and we found it pretty worthless. The level of exercise is not that high -- unless you're completely sedentary right now, you won't get much out of it. You're better off joining a real gym. There is no magic bullet -- to lose weight and/or get in shape, you need to put in the work. I've been working out with a personal trainer at a local gym and have noticed real results. I'm in my mid-50's and am in the best shape of my adult life.

I was a member of Curves for a few months. They level of exercise/effort is low, low, low. They did offer some nutrition classes. I was very disappointed with the customer service. If you are serious about exercise and results, go somewhere else.
