There's always Jack's Bagels next to Trader Joe's on Milpas. Pretty good bagels there.

That's the original Jack's Bagels location and they just invested $60K in that hood a couple of years ago after a year or more of struggling with the health dept over their permit to make hot food. Too bad.... I guess employee issues (keeping good ones) could no longer be glossed over.

Daily Grind on De la Vina and Mission, they are excellent. I haven't tried Java Station's yet, my next stop and will find out. Good bagels are a rare commodity in this town.

Daily Grind gets their bagels from Jack's. Would love to find a place that knows the difference between Brooklyn Jawbreakers and a wad of tasteless, circular-shaped whitebread.

Hmmm I enjoy Jacks on Milpas... Non Mexican food on milpas is hard to come by. So a Brooklyn Jawbreaker huh? Sounds hard but delicious. So where do New Yorkers that live here get the best bagels? Authentic sounds tasty.. As far as NY style pizza I enjoy Gino's first, Paesano's second, and Nicky D's third.

I am with you 872. I know it sounds snobby but there just ain't a good local bagel. Got a semi-fix last year when wifey had a box of H & H shipped in for Father's Day. Not quite fresh and not quite Brooklyn, but it was enough!

I'll probably get slammed for saying this from all you who insist that we buy everything local, but Panera's has really good bagels. And, yes, they are made locally every day (they say) but I'm sure some will insist we can't buy these as Panera's is a big bad chain.

I'm not from NY but I think that even a good bagel isn't quite the specific crusty NY style. So by that definition, even if jacks or panera is good.. (as in good bread) it just isn't a crusty, chewy, make your jaw tired, New York style. Just like there is good pizza that isn't NY style, it's possible for decent bready bagels, to also Not be NY style. Back me up New Yorkers?

Hey that's cool that ez2 is from NY but also gave me a tip for bagels at 99cent store. OhAnd I'm sure they are softer than NY but Jacks on milpas has a yummy onion bialy. I prefer it to the bagels to make a sandwich on.

Panera huh? You're probably right that that is a good alternative to Jacks upper state. Unfortunately for Jacks, the newly remodeled panera with parking, probably became a jacks alternative to that crowd and probably contributed to jacks failing up there. Just speculating.. Oh and those crusty ny style bagels are made with Malt. That is what creates a much crustier texture.

I don't think it's snobby to say that NY style bagels are the only decent ones. What passes for bagels in most places here is bread that's shaped like a bagel. I've been to Panera and had decent bread, but their bagels are not real bagels. They are not dense, not chewy, and not tasty. Making bagels by boiling and then baking them takes time and talent. It's probably not profitable for bakeries here to go through that time and expense. I don't know where the Santa Barbara Roasting Company gets their bagels, but they are pretty good. They get delivered before 6:00 am every morning, so someone is baking real bagels overnight around here.

I agree there are no good bagels in Santa Barbara, Someone spoke about Jack's. I am not even sure that They boill their bagels, It is like bread with a hole in the middle. recently, The bagel shop closed on State Street mear the Granada, The owner was a super nice guy, but he made bad bagels. I don't think anyone had the heart to tell him. Gelson'ssells a new brand of frozen bagels that come from New York. They're actually not too bad.

To 430: Exactly right. There was a bunch of hoopla about the bagel place that opened near the Granada. I was eager to try it. I went once, and that was it. I felt bad for the guy that opened it and spent a bunch of money, but not bad enough to go back.
