Roads Reopen in Los Padres Forest

Los Padres National Forest officials have reopened the Romero Camuesa Road (Forest Road 5N15.1) at Divide Peak as well as the stream crossing at Agua Caliente that provides vehicular access to the Middle Santa Ynez, P-Bar Flats, Rock and Mono campgrounds.

Recent biological site analyses of the stream crossing indicate a diminished presence of the federally endangered California red-legged frog. The stream crossing was closed in April from the crossing west to where the road ends near Mono Campground to protect the red-legged frog tadpoles during breeding season.

"Our site surveys found a reduced number of red-legged frogs in the Agua Caliente stream crossing," said Santa Barbara District Ranger John Smith. "We've reopened the crossing to motorized traffic, and will continue to monitor the stream and take action to protect the red-legged frogs as conditions warrant."

Ranger Smith reminded the public that fire restrictions remain in effect and campfires are permitted only in designated campfire use sites in Middle Santa Ynez, P-Bar Flats, Rock and Mono campgrounds. Target shooting is strictly prohibited.
