Moss Motors, probably the world's largest supplier of British car parts. That is, if they're still in business. I no longer own an MG (thank Dog), so I no longer have to deal with them and their attitude. Moss Motors started in Goleta. Another local company that made good is Inogen, which makes portable oxygen breathing systems for sale worldwide. Also Carrow's Restaurants.

Software.com started by UCSB alums . Made millionaires out of quite a few local folk through their stock options. That is , if they timed their exits properly, before tech took the big dive.

325117P - While both Lockheed and Northrop have ties to SB, neither current company (Lockheed-Martin or Northrop Grumman) started here. The Loughead's (pronounced Lockheed) original SB business venture tanked, their next venture was sold before it got swallowed up by the Depression, and the current Lockheed company can be traced back to Burbank. Jack Northrop lived in Santa Barbara and got his start working for the Lougheads, but he never started a business here.

Hidden Valley Ranch dressing. The Hidden Valley Guest Ranch was on San Marcos Pass, down in a canyon, a family run business. It was a club, my brother was a member. They had a nice swimming pool, resturant and such. No overnight accomodations, as far as I know. People raved about the salad dressing, the rest is history.

Rusty's pizza? Lynda_com? Citrix? Lynda started in Ojai, that's not SB or even SB county... Rustys is a small chain and not really noteworthy... as is the Habit. Software_com had a great domain name but no real business which is why they died... Citrix wasnt started here - GotoMyPC was and was acquired by Citrix. Sonos is and was founded here as a number of other tech players that are large companies but not well known - RightScale, CommisionJunction, Fastclick(now a a part of valueclick), GreenHills, Kinkos is probably the biggest natl company to emerge from SB and of course Motel6 and Deckers and Powell & Peralta and Montecito Picture Company and a few others that sprouted from the money men... Its a remarkable list considering the size of our town. Here's to many more!

Computer Motion which started in Goleta was bought out by Intuitive Surgical. Now trading at $492.57 a share. ISRG wouldn't be where it is without the brains behind Computer Motion. Goleta and SB is blessed to have a bunch of very bright entrepreneurs coming from UCSB. I believe FLIR Systems started here too? We have a lot of niche companies located here that the big companies need to thrive.

Santa Barbara Research Center in the 1950s into the 1960s was in barracks next to the original SB Airport buildings. It was bought out and became part of Hughes in 1960 I think it was when I had a summer job there and I don't know the history of it since then. It seems to be perhaps connected with Raytheon which I gather is now a Hughes owned company. I think it's fair to say that SBRC started in SB became a large company.

The answer as I know is, "QAD, Mentor, Deckers, Big Dogs,SB bank and trust, Kinkos(FEDex)" local stockbroker (with a goleta heart)
