Capps vs. Maldonado
updated: Sep 27, 2012, 2:13 PM

By Edhat Subscriber

Has anyone else noticed the Capps and Maldonado TV commercials? They run back to back advertisements criticizing each other of the same thing. Apparently both of them voted to increase taxes but didn't pay their own. It's pretty comical when they're right after one another.

The Independent and UCSB are hosting a Capps vs. Maldonado Debate. The congressional candidates square off on October 9th. (09/28/12)

Yes. But I think what is bugging me even more is that KEYT plays the local shows and ads at a much higher volume than thei LA feed. It is obnoxious enough to have to listen to the ads (I mute just as soon as I hear them) but when they are screeching at you, it is uber obnoxious!

Getting information on politicians from their own ads (or that of their rivals) is like getting dating advice from a bathroom stall.

George sucks? Mary is easy? Clearly, it must be fact. Someone took the time to write it on this wall with sharpie.

Do your own research. You'll arrive at a much better decision.

Capps will forever have my vote for casting one of the few votes against going to war in Iraq. Imagine if a few others in Congress had had her smarts, or wisdom. Would have saved us TRILLIONS and many lives. Think of how much health care we could have paid for if we hadn't wasted that money on the 'foreign adventures' our forefathers warned us about 200 years ago.

That being said, it looks like someone told her she had to go negative to win this election in a more competitive District. What I can't figure is how they know to run the commercials back to back. Can you tell KEYT, everytime Abel runs one, I want mine to follow his?

I'm not thrilled with either. It's one of those "hold your nose" and pull the (imaginary ) lever years for me. The ads are beyond annoying, but I noticed that, so far at least, I'm not getting as many junk mailers to recycle.

I'm Zipper 101 and I approved this comment.

I haven't seen the ballot yet but if there is a 3rd person running, I may vote for them because I will be so worn out with the 2 of them by Nov. 6th. What gets me also is that the 2 of them don't seem to realize how annoying it is to go back to back to back to back ads..

From the moment G.Washington sat in the Presidential chair, the entire system of government has been corrupt & will continue to be so until the entire system of government is changed...period.
Voting has never done any good in this country, except to let those who vote feel they`ve had a voice in their own destiny.
Every marked ballot is nothing more than an addition to the eulogy of Uhmerika.

They say the same thing because they are the same person. Capps is a term limit oathbreaker with staffer tax problems and Maldonado is a tax cheat and tax pledge liar who got booted from his negotiated appointment and now wants to use our necks as a stepping stone to his next. When will Santa Barbara wake up and realize we get the politicians we deserve and not all politics is about good feelings?

PS...can either of these candidates speak in a normal voice...it's like a race to the bottom for pandering kindergarten speak.

I think they are both decent public minded servants who have a place in government. I wish they both would stop the use of "fighting" in their promotions. Please stop fighting with one another, work it out like we're supposed to as decent citizens.

I blame this drek on political consultants, even if the candidates approve of it. The saddest part is that it works. Otherwise they wouldn't spend buckets of money doing this.

If you can't vote FOR someone then vote AGAINST the two party system by selecting a 3rd party candidate libertarian for true freedom or gasp green party fascism :-)

They will not win - but if any party gets above the %5 total then that party will have a new voice in what goes on.

Voting for the lesser of TWO evils is a wasted vote.

What a ghastly waste of money; can't imagine how much it costs to blanket the TV stations with repeated back to back ads, sometimes several sets in just one hour of programming. The total amount of money being applied this time for American elections -- Congressional plus Presidential --- given that we're in a recession, is an international bad example of waste.

I'm an independent voter (presumably the target audience for these ads), but whenever I see one of these truth-bending attack ads I am significantly LESS likely to vote for the candidate sponsoring it. Unfortunately, they do seem to influence many voters.

The worst part of the Capps' ad is her complaint about Maldonado's vote to raise taxes which he did to help the Democrats! He was praised for bi-partisanship at the time for this act. They are both examples of the corrupting process known as the Two Party System. Same for Jackson and Stoker contest. I will vote for any other candidate in both these races as an attempt to show the discouragement I feel. We need at least a "none of the above" choice if we can't get a system that allows more views to be heard.

The worst to me is Maldonado claiming he is a job creator. Now that's rich. A guy whose father ran an ag biz is a job creator! HA! And the tax cheat claims by both parties are just amazing (although Maldonado's do seem a bit more real)...

They both suck. I will be voting for a 3rd party canidate. The fact that the Natl parties are funding these ads makes me sick... they're supposed to be OUR reps not the puppets of Natl party politics...

As far as the money being spent is concerned. When the media companies have the most to gain, they assure that the discourse remains as contested as possible - that's how they make their billions...

If Lois took the job under pressure and didn'twant it, why is she still holding on to it? Surely someone else could have been found to do the job in the many years since she first ran. She has been corrupted by the dark side, so to speak. Now she apparently has delusions that her daughter should inherit the position. This stuff needs to be pointed out and stopped. No apologies alone for acts that can be avoided or at least remedied.

Unless third parties win a lawsuit in CA, all you people who say you are voting for them in Nov for Congress are going to be sorely disappointed! After Prop 14 passed in 2010, we now have a top 2 primary system. This means there are only two candidates who are going to appear on your ballots for the general election in Nov. You can thank Maldonado for helping to push this one through at the expense of his soul (ie voting with the Dems to approve the largest tax increase in CA's history). And now it appears Abel is benefiting from his pet proposition. Believe me, I'm in the same camp as those who don't want to vote for the lesser of 2 evils for Congress, but prop 14 restricted our freedoms to do so (given that the 3rd party lawsuits against prop 14 fail). The end result for our district is we are left with just 2 terrible options.

Terrible campaign. Both candidates are weak, but we went ahead and contributed to Capps because of her compassionate voting record, not her rhetorical skills. Maldonado means empowering Ryan/Romney and Boehner for more deadlock and bluster. Is the Democratic ticket with more Pelosi much better? Barely. But on a cold-blooded/warm-blooded continuum, the Dems take it. Whether it's Clinton's fault, Bush's fault, Obama's fault or all of the above plus more, this is a time when some compassion for families and small businesses is called for, not hard-nosed McKinsey-style "off with their heads" lopping of human services by the Survival-of-the-richest Party, Inc.

The Capps ad is particularly bad. It starts of correctly stating that Moldonado has a tax dispute with the IRS, which is not uncommon, but then the rest of the ad implies he has allready lost the dispute and owes taxes that the IRS claimed were due and refuses to pay them. Then she apparently failed to pay taxes herself for a long time and when she got caught she finally paid up. This kind of grossly misleading advertisement should be actionable by the candidates running against her and certainly does not speak well for Capps who is now on her fifth term in Congress when she promised whe would only run for one full term after taking over her deceased husband term and with no backround and qualification to do so other than being married to the deceased Congressman.

Lois Capps office has been unfailingly helpful to me and my colleagues, even when the colleagues were obviously of a different political affiliation. If only there were more representatives voting against the most recent war, it would have saved many, many thousands of lives, and mammoth amounts of money. Why is there's easy money for war, but improving our infrastructure as a country is so much more difficult?

COMMENT 326235 agree helpful negative off topic

2012-09-30 10:18 AM

Lois cast her "anti-war" vote because it was 100% safe for her to do this - she showed no courage and the politicos who run her in Washington gave her a pass to appease her local constituents, because they already had the votes to pass the war issue anyway.

If Capps was truly courageous or showed one iota of leadership, she would have broken ranks with her war-majority party (yes, the Dems) and rallied far more votes against this war than her one totally safe, innocuous one.

Capps deserves nothing for this cowardly cop-out "anti-war" vote to keep you happy while she left the rest of the nation fall into peril. She has been worthless for our local district and for the nation.

Capps is one party shill lap-dog that has to go along with her lap-dog cronies Das Williams who never met a pedophile teacher he does not want to protect, and Hannah-Beth "Taxin" Jackson.
