I have been seeing a trolley with signs "Shopping Trolley, Free" on upper
state street. Anyone know what that is all about?

In most of America shopping carts (trolleys) are free for use at grocery stores. In some more urban areas they will make you give a deposit for the cart, but it is returned to you when you finish your shopping and bring the trolley back.

Do you mean a shopping cart or a vehicle?

It is a Downtown Organization project. Apparently it runs from some of the hotels to Paseo Nuevo and La Cumbre Plaza. It may be temporary I am not sure...

It is not, I repeat not, a Downtown Organization project. The trolley belongs to Santa Barbara Old Town Trolley, the same company that runs the Trolley Parade of Lights every Christmas. The shopping trolley is sponsored by Honest Tea, which has a large wrap around advertisement on the trolley. The Free Trolley Shopping service starts at Fess Parker's Doubletree every day at 10a.m. For more information call Santa Barbara Old Town Trolley at 965-0353.

The same tea company has done less than the honest thing by putting large advertising stickers on the few remaining public phones on upper State Street (and maybe elsewhere). This sort of advertising is not legal in Santa Barbara (are you reading this, SB Sign Committee?). I will not by products from companies that advertise illegally.

The shopping trolley will run until October 20th five times a day starting at the Hyatt at 10am and visiting all the hotels in the beach area. The trolley stops at Paseo Nuevo and La Cumbre Plaza. It's a ninety minute loop and it's free.

I have used the shopping trolley and I find the service to be far better than anything MTD has to offer. The driver was polite and the whole experience was fun. I find it shocking that someone was allowed to post a comment slandering the owner of the trolley company. In a few months thousands of people will ride the trollies through Santa Barbara and enjoy the sites of Christmas. Santa Barbara Trolley is an upstanding company that provides a wholesome service to Santa Barbara County and the owner does not deserve the smear job directed at him.

A wonderful idea, great for the merchants and the tourists!! I LOVE our trolleys and so do the tourists. I always take my out of town friends on the one at the beach for the trolley tour. I don't understand all the negative comments about a new and great idea in this town that provides a free service not only for the tourists but the locals.

Oh my, I was hoping that trolley was something I had suggested a few years back when I couldn't get a parking place in 5 points where there is Ross', Albertson, Fresca's, etc. The parking is so bad that I told the owner of an Italian Restaurant he should suggest to the 5 points landlord to get a shuttle that will take people from 5 points to LaCumbre or vice versa so you could park and then take the shuttle to 5 points where it is so bad! Guess that is not what's happening....I am disappointed.

As a relative of the owner of the business referenced in comment 324996 I ask that you all please ignore this unwarranted and fact less comment.

MAMA, if the trolley stops at La Cumbre Plaza it's just a short walk across the street to 5 Points. I like your idea though, maybe if you suggest it to the trolley company they will stop over there too.

I know the driver and am familiar with the family of the trolly company. I have always known them to be good honest citizens of Santa Barbara. The trolly that is sponsored by the malls is a great idea.
