Shark Sighting
updated: Sep 27, 2012, 8:38 AM

Source: Santa Barbara Office of Emergency Management

At approximately 5 pm today, Wednesday 9/26, an experienced local surfer, observed a 14' white shark at the entrance of Santa Barbara Harbor. He was surfing at the sandspit when the shark surfaced and "charged" directly in front of him, but not at him. He could see the entire top portion of the shark. He believes the shark was chasing something, possibly feeding. He estimated the water depth to be 6'. He quickly left the water, then watched from shore. The shark surfaced again, making a second "charge" along the surface. The City of Santa Barbara beaches are being posted for the next 72 hours.
