Creaky, Leaky & Stinky
updated: Sep 26, 2012, 7:15 PM

By Edhat Subscriber

Many of our local trash service's trucks have severe leakage problems that leave behind liquid pools which have a terrible odor and can't be healthy.
The on-foot pick up service down Linden Ave to empty sidewalk trash receptacles via a plastic collection bin with wheels have the same problem; leakage that leave behind liquids on the sidewalks.
We have called Harrison to explain the problem, but our complaints fall on deaf ears.
Can anyone offer a solution?

I have lived in Carp for 23 years have have never had anything but great service from Harrision. I encourage you to talk to the city about the Carp Ave Cans. They city may actually own them and Harrision just dumps them. Harrision has always been quick to fix issues in our neighborhood and have been good to the city with the neighboorhood clean up days. Call Dave Durflinger, the city manager, and get his thoughts. Very nice guy and quick to help out.

Thank you 324588, just sent a letter to Durfliner!

Iv been pressure washing the stains off for years. Retail and residential...there are also companies you can hire to do it or for your home just rent one.

Contact Erin Maker, Environmental Coordinator for the City of Carpinteria. She also oversees the trash hauling contract with Harrison. Erin can be reached at 805-684-5405 x 415.

My only complaint with Harrison is that the trash cans are green and the green waste can is brown! Makes no sense.

Harrison has always done a great job for us. Be sure to call the city as your complaint sounds serious; unhealthy and plain old yucky!

Guess what? Garbage stinks... don't eat from it and you won't get sick.

Also sidewalks are dirty; dog waste alone should discourage anyone from wanting to eat off the sidewalk and I don't think those eggs fried on a hot sidewalk are ever served up for human consumption. If you walk barefoot wash your feet before going to bed, the ground is dirt - it's covered in dirty, you know.

Ever lived in a city during a garbage strike? It's not the garbage haulers' fault that garbage stinks. Blaming them is like holding plumbers responsible for the smell and contents of raw sewage.

753, how helpful. Except that there's a difference between what you're talking about and the accidental pooling of liquid draining out when trash is removed.

This is a legitimate complaint. Don't make it like the OP was saying garbage shouldn't smell. This is a completely different issue.

I want to know who to call to complain about the street sweeper who comes by and thinks hes doing a great job sweeping at about 25 miles per hour! I make sure to move our cars on sweep day, only to return and see the same trash and road debris in front of my house every time. I think maybe weve been used to the poor service for so long that nothing gets done about it. All the streets off Linden close to the beach are full of sand and road gravel that the sweeper leaves behind every single time. Im sure we pay a pretty penny for this service and wish that who ever is in charge would stay on top of the contractor. What a waste of tax dollars.

I agree the street sweepers do not remove refuse from curbside. I often wondered what the purpose of the street sweepers was.

This isn't Harrison's fault. It's the garbage-maker's fault.

You should post notices to every owner of every can which has liquid in it, "Please only throw away dry material."

That's help.

Im really surprised that Marborg hasnt taken over that area yet, but then again our city services never go out to bid. I wonder if the vendors and the City public work employees have anything to do with this being possible? I bet the City of Carpinteria is overpaying for most of the services it gets due to this. Why not try more local vendors? I hope city council is reading this.

829P, you gotta be kidding. Take a look at the rates the folks in the County pay just outside Carp city limits. Their trash gets hauled to Tajiguas, our's gets hauled to Hiway 126, after equivalent sorting and recycling. Marborg and the old Allied were much much more expensive. Carp trash bill is the best deal around; only wish Carp Water District could be like that.

@082 I think our definitions of "equivelent" are very different if you want to compare the recycling @ Marborg lol. Lets not compare apples to oranges. Are you employed by the City? Im all for creating local jobs(from within our county at least) and keeping our tax dollars local as well. I was talking about ALL the services the City of Carpinteria in GENERAL has not sent out to bid for years. Its a great way to keep the marketplace fair at least saving the taxpayers $$$.
