Does anybody remember the old sign on 101 adjacent to Carpinteria that said "World's Safest Beach" ?
Whatever happened to the sign and when was it taken down ?

Sign was removed as it is no longer the world's safest beach due to the protected seal rookery aka seal buffet for great white sharks. The protection of the rookery has caused a great influx in sharks and increased danger to beach goers. The rookery should be reopened to allow humans and dogs access year around to that stretch of beach.

I remember the EdHat story on this, but we could use a follow-up to it now. Palmintari, where are you? http://www.edhat.com/site/tidbit.cfm?nid=52880

I strongly disagree that we should allow humans & dogs to invade & bother this beautiful community of sea lions. Can't animals have at least SOME peace from us ever-encroaching humans?

I fear more from the dogs off leash and beer bottle tossing drunks at the Sandyland end of the beach than I do from sharks. Scummy people are what make the city beach most dangerous.

508, agree and thank you for your comment. I don't care about the "World's Safest Beach" sign, so much. Would love to see photo of the old Lemon Packing billboard, though.

Maybe the "world's safest beach" sign is leaning against the old "Santa" from Santa Clause Lane, now located down south somewhere.

It was "The Worlds Safest Beach" because of the very gently slope. You can walk way way out and not go over your head. Plus; there is very little undertow. It had nothing to do with marine life being present or absent.

Reg Reynolds used to run a little bait shop/general store across from the Lemon Packing plant and just a block or so from the beach entrance. He was a gentle gem of a man!

The sign didn't look so good next to the shark warning sign.

The sign was removed due to the ability to sue the City of Carpinteria if someone was hurt in anyway!

I remember old Reggie Reynolds and his bait shop fondly. I lived on Carpinteria Beach in the early 1960s and used to fish a lot and dive for abalone and lobster on the reef. Once at the reef fishing in a tiny rowboat on a very foggy morning a whale surfaced only a few yards away, giving us quite a scare. Super-low tides were opportunities to get free hooks and lures that were usually underwater off of the pier pilings (RIP). Reggie was the source of information on what to fish for, bait to use, etc. Does anyone out there remember Reggie's special Fishermen's Handshake?

"World's Safest Beach" had nothing to do with presence or absence of sharks. Clearly a dog owner with an agenda is mixing up opinions with facts. The designation came from the gentle slope of the bottom topography and geography. Carp St Beach does not have the riptides or strong currents or longshore flows common at other beaches. Surf is also more gentle. However people are lulled into complacency like to blame others for their own "miscues". I heard the sign opened the city and the state park to liability issues so during construction work the sign was removed and never replaced after construction was completed.

On our new beach mural John Wullbrant painted, it says "Worlds Safest Beach". Check out this beautiful painting; on Wullbrant Way (named for John's father), in the 1st block of Linden Avenue, heading toward the beach.

Could be it created public liability if something happened on this "safest beach"!
