Giant Moth
updated: Sep 26, 2012, 4:16 PM

By Edhat Subscriber

Brooming out the chicken coop, this thing with a 7" wingspan flapped out of nowhere trying unsuccessfully to escape. I thought it was a bat but on closer look at it's body I think it's a giant moth, does anyone know what it is? No complaints about photos please, the thing was moving constantly and I just had my point and shoot trying to get a focus but difficult.

I looked it up and there are a lot of interesting myths and folklore on this one. Based on the reading, you're either going to win the lottery or one of your chickens will die...hopefully the lottery.

Ascalapha odorata. Black Witch moth. Only reason I know this, is because someone else had similar posting a week or two back.

Lucky you, getting to see such a beauty. I love moths. Have a friend who is petrified to death of moths, but loves butterflies. It's the fluttering motion that sends the moth-o-phobes running for the hills. Weird, huh?

Why is she on her back in second photo? She's okay, right?

507, looks like it is gripping the mesh.
I hope it flies away with no wing damage. Fantastic shot!

You need to move ! Black Witch moths are considered a sign of impending death in Mexican folklore... though you did say it was in the Chicken Coop - it's over for those chickens !
