Affordable Plumber
updated: Sep 23, 2012, 3:28 PM

Hi. I am relatively new to the area and I need a plumber for some water pressure issues whose prices won't break my bank account! (Last guy wanted to charge me $700 to remove two solar panels.) Can anyone suggest someone?

Sergio Michel. I live with three guys, each of whom has his own talent in a certain phase of construction. They know good work when they see it. They said, "Call Sergio."

Kait Plumbing... Chris just finished some work in our house. Installed 2 new toilets, an RO system, new kitchen faucet, new utility sink and faucet. Thorough, reliable work and competitive prices. Very happy.

Lots of good plumbers around. In regards to the prices, consider the following: Fast, Good and Cheap. Pick two out of three.

Fast + Good = Expensive. You want it now and good quality work. It's gonna cost ya.

Good + Cheap = Slow. You want good work, but not to pay too much. The contractor is going to schedule higher paying jobs in front of you. Wouldn't you?

Fast + Cheap = Inferior work. You want it now but have no money to pay, so you'll get an inferior job. Unless the plumber is your cousin.

Had a good experience with Anacapa Plumbing a couple of weeks ago. $90/hour plus materials. Called me back on a Sunday and agreed to come first thing next morning to fix what the last guy left leaking.

Mission Plumbing, Taylor Jones. Says what he'll do, does what he says. Excellent quality, competetive rates.

389: Thanks for saying it out loud. So many don't know or understand this basic rule. It applies throughout the building trades, and in lots of other fields too. We do good+cheap, so we're slow. Customers can't understand that when I say "minimum 5 weeks" it means 'don't' bother calling me to ask where it is until at least 5 weeks have passed.'

We always use R.J. Carrol. They are fast to get there and fast to fix the problem, seem to always have every thing needed on the truck, all their plumbers have been nice people, and their price is reasonable.

Lee & Sons. They've been around for more than 60 years doing professional plumbing. They always guarantee their work and treat your property with respect. I've known Rick Mendoza for years; comes highly recommended for his conscientious professionalism.

It might be overkill for your needs, but John Lochern is an electrician that has extensive experience installing pumps and boosters needed for properties with low pressure water. There are some neighborhoods where these systems are almost mandatory (parts of Montecito, etc). If any of the plumbers listed above come to the conclusion that you need a pump to boost the pressure, you're looking at a significant cost. Have John take a look at your electrical needs as these systems are unique and you definitely want both a plumber and electrician with experience. He charges standard retail rates ($75 an hour if memory serves), is fair, will give you honest info, and a firm quote. He also can connect you with the plumber that knows these systems best. Always get multiple bids.

A specific recommendation as to water pressure issues would be to call and talk with Jon of APEX Professional Plumbing Services at 805-403-8656. He is a friendly outgoing Santa Barbara type with a good attitude toward homeowner's plumbing problems That is: Visit the problem, look, learn, and fix quickly while there if that's possible.

He's unusual in that pressure checking is always free. It's a service call for most, but his "free advertising". He feels that building Santa Barbara acquaintance recommendations is best advertising.

He comes to your site and does two things free: One pressure checks. Two water heater strapping/security (earthquake caution) and general condition.

In the course of years of acquaintance, he has established his one-man shop, APEX -- "The Top of The Peak", as he calls it. He's a fun guy to meet. :-) Recommended.

Goodland Plumbing does beautiful work. Too bad most of it is inside the walls. Leo's Plumbing and Drain is also good.

I do not recommend hiring an inexpensive trade for anything. You'll regret it later. Pay the money now and you won't have to pay again later.

I had this question 2 weeks ago and called Channel plumbing they came out right away (last minute close to 5pm) and were amazing:) Very helpful had almost everything we needed in the back of his truck and went to 2 other properties after fixing several problems at our first house. Highly recommend!
