Santa Barbara City College Incident Clarification of Earlier News Report by Local Media

On Wednesday, September 19, 2012 in the early afternoon Santa Barbara City College Campus Security received a report from staff members regarding an incident that had just transpired on West Campus. These staff had escorted a student who was in possession of an airsoft gun from a building and directed the student to return the airsoft gun to his vehicle. They described the airsoft gun as clear plastic with a distinguishable bright orange tip that designates it as a facsimile gun. Security responded to this report and sought to locate the student by conducting a search of the West Campus. The student was not located.

Later in the day, a call was received alerting Campus Security that the student identified earlier was on campus attending class. Security responded and discovered the student had in his possession an airsoft gun. Security immediately removed the student from class, took custody of the airsoft gun and escorted the student off campus after disciplinary sanctions were imposed. On September 20, 2102, an incident report was filed with Santa Barbara Police Department who took custody of the airsoft gun.

Santa Barbara City College takes situations of this nature seriously, as we place paramount importance on the safety of our students, faculty, staff and campus visitors. Situations of this nature allow college officials to evaluate and strengthen existing emergency protocols in order to assure the highest level of security for the college community.
