We live near Santa Barbara Junior High on Modoc and they're hosting the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. I
looks like the participants can camp at the school overnight. I support the cause and the participants, but
the organizers have placed No-Parking restrictions on Portesuello though the street is not being used for
staging, vehicle or any other obvious function that would require the restriction. The result is our
neighborhood is packed with cars and we were given no notice of the event; which would have been
appreciated. Does any know what the purposed of the Portesuello parking bans is?

I only heard of the event today as well. For the number of participants, their word of mouth seems very low. I wonder how much money they left on the table (though breast cancer is second only AIDS in the amount of funding per death)

Today I bicycled. I stopped at ALL the stop signs. I made clear signals for my turns. I smiled at all the motorists who waited for me to go by. I do NOT wear spandex (would be too funny!). Where were you #161 that you weren't watching?

161 You aren't paying attention. MOST of the bicyclists in this town (or any town) follow road rules. "Never seen one"? I see them all the time. Bicycling events are NOT ruining this town by any means. They promote healthy exercise, environmentally-friendly transportation, worthy charities, and they increase tourism revenues at the same time. Why so serious?

you live near La Cumbre Junior High.......Santa Barbara is on Cota Street. It is a two day at most inconvenience for you, but the people who they are walking for are battling for their lives....how about just a tad bit of patience and understanding, if you support the cause why is it really necessary that the organizers of the event, who have an awful lot to think about, spend time contacting people who live near the event....the street is public property, if the organizers got a permit....then they dont owe anyone advance notice....entitlement is annoying. (oh and the school is not hosting the event...just giving the event space to do a wonderful thing)

Just be aware that much of the money being raised goes toward vivisection. This means it is used to induce cancer in animals in laboratories, where the animals are subjected to untold torment. Primates, monkeys, dogs, cats, rats, mice, rabbits are all "tools" of the vivisectors. People think they are doing good, when they raise money for cancer research, but I think everyone should be aware that their donations usually go toward animal suffering and torment.

Tracy the OP has a valid request. A little goodwill goes a long way. With some notice that there'd be a lot of people parking (and honking) in our neighborhood, we would have taken our dog across town do she wouldn't be barking at the new traffic and visitors all day and repeatedly waking our newborn. Did the organizers do anything wrong? No, but it could have been done much better, in a more neighborly fashion. I don't think that is too much to ask.

I went to the PETA website, and Avon is not on the list of charities which fund animal based research, and I also went further to Avons site, and followed the trail of where the money goes. From what PETA and Avon both say, the money generated by this particular event does not go to animal based research....unless a specific link is given, I dont think it was an accurate comment for this event. To those who need notice, and feel the event needed to be more neighborly....I just dont agree that you are entitled to that and really wonder why you do. Neighbors dont get noticed about this kind of thing....because it is not necessary.

We live up on Cathedral Oaks, and the Walk passed our house. The stream of walkers, and a few joggers, continued from just before lunch until late in the afternoon. They seemed to be all women, many talking loudly to each other as they passed. A lot of motorists tooted them on their way. I saw marked patrol cars passing them frequently, checking on their welfare. Some walkers were having a hard time, stopping to rest at the bus stop seats across from us.

I agree with the people complaining about the honking done to support the walkers. I live on E. Anapamu and for the four hours or more it took to have the walkers go by (they come in groups of two to five, straggling along the street.) And cars seem to think they have to show support by honking continuously all the way down Anapamu street at the walkers. Havinfg participated in these sorts of walking events before, I gaurantee you the constat "support honking" becomes extremely annoying as does the expectation that the walkers wave at the honkers. It was unneeded noise pollution that disturbed a restful Saturday and gave me and the walkers a head ache.

Most certainly a worthy cause and all, but the "support honking," like the inane whoops and "woo-hoos" that accompany so many events now, seem to be part of our debased culture as derived from "reality" TV.

Decades of feeding women HRT drugs self-created this epidemic. Women should be doing more than just marching; they should be protesting this institutional medical abuse of their health.

I live nowhere near there, but am completely supportive of the anti-noise comments. Consideration for your impact on others goes a long way towards generating good will for your cause. Lack of consideration, and honking (just don't do it unless you're trying to stop an accident!) go a long way towards generating hostility towards the participants and your cause. [People in cars have no idea how loud car horns are to bicyclists and pedestrians. Please don't honk unless necessary.]

Ear plugs work or go take a walk on the beach or something instead of sitting in your house getting more po'd every time you hear a car horn. It's a great event for a worthy cause.

Every time we raise money for a cause we should inspect where this money goes. I will never give ONE CENT to a cause that supports animal testing. Agreed, test the pedophiles.

Most of us who live in neighborhoods that are frequently part of the route for various runs, walks and bicycling events appreciate being advised that such an event is occurring because it gives us the ability to plan ahead. Basically, we have 3 options: 1. We can leave for the duration of the event 2. We can ignore it, or 3. We can plan to be outside cheering on the participants. For most events, there is forewarning - especially if there is going to be a street closure or parking restrictions. I too, was surprised by the lack of notification about the Breast Cancer Walk. Luckily, for me, I was home in the afternoon when they passed by and was able to spend time outside congratulating, thanking and encouraging. It's not so much 'entitlement' as it is common courtesy to let those who will be affected by these events know about them ahead of time - it all about options, and it's nice to have them so that the good feelings and support are flowing!

I live on Modoc and we were all notified a month ago - and then again 2 days ago. The no parking signs are for road work next week if you read it. Nothing to do with the walk - and all the pink tents were pretty cool.
