Dog Rescued from Cliff
updated: Sep 22, 2012, 5:46 PM

By the Urban Hikers

A small dog who ran up the cliff near Hendry's Beach on Saturday afternoon around 2:00 required rescue from SBFD. Junior apparently became frightened of the high tide and waves and attempted to get to higher ground by scampering up the face of the cliff. Unfortunately Junior would not respond to the calls, whistles and coaxing from both his human companion Brett or his canine companion Wesley. With an incoming tide, Brett called 9-1-1 for assistance.

SBFD firefighters from Station 6 arrived and accessed the site from Hendry's Beach. Unable to spot the dog from the beach or from atop the cliff, SBFD requested the Harbor Patrol's assistance. Initially the thought was that a member of SBFD Station 1's Rescue team would need to rappel down the cliff to help the stranded dog, and as they were readying for that operation, plan B was also initiated. The Fire Captain from Station 6 began to ascend the cliff from the beach below, and at about 25' up the cliff he was able to see Junior and gain the dog's trust. After getting ahold of Junior, the Captain was able to assist Junior who was then able to run the rest of the way down the embankment to his owner.

We are happy that neither person nor pooch was injured in this rescue operation.
