Following a month-and-a-half long investigation, Jose Luis Castillo, age 24, and Daniel Ordonez Jr., age
20, both from Lompoc, were arrested for their roles in the sexual assault of a 41-year old female victim
that occurred in the City of Santa Barbara during the weekend of Fiesta.
On August 4, 2012 at 2:01 p.m., SBPD Officers Jared Hall and Aaron Denbrook responded to the 500
block of Olive Street and contacted the victim of a sexual assault that happened earlier in the day. Their
investigation revealed the following. At approximately 2:30 a.m. the victim was dropped off at the
Artisan Court Apartments at 420 E. Cota Street. The victim was extremely intoxicated and her intention
was to go to a friend's apartment within the complex. Upon arrival, however, the victim discovered that
her friend had not yet arrived home, and as a result the victim waited in the parking lot of the complex
for her friend to appear. While the victim was waiting in the lot a group of four subjects, including
suspects Castillo and Ordonez, left a party that was taking place in another apartment at that location.
The four men came across the victim and coaxed her to the parking lot on the north side of 525 Olive
Street. There, two of the men remained by a parked car while Castillo and Ordonez sexually assaulted
the victim in the parking lot.
During the course of their investigation Officer Hall and Officer Denbrook recovered several items of
physical evidence and identified locations in the area with security cameras that might have documented
the assault. Ultimately, surveillance videos from three locations were recovered that depicted the
suspects and aspects of the incident.
SBPD Crimes Against Persons Detectives Michael Claytor and Brian Larson were assigned to conduct the
follow-up investigation. They were eventually able to identify the suspects and on September 19, 2012,
$100,000.00 arrest warrants were obtained for Castillo and Ordonez. Castillo's warrant was for the
crime of attempt rape and Ordonez's warrant was for the crime of forced oral copulation. Additionally,
search warrants were obtained for Castillo's residence at 814 W. Walnut Avenue and Ordonez's
residence at 917 North M Street, both in Lompoc. At 6:00 a.m. on September 20, 2012 a team of SBPD
detectives, assisted by Lompoc Police, served the arrest and search warrants and took Castillo and
Ordonez into custody. Castillo and Ordonez were booked into Santa Barbara County Jail on the
aforementioned charges.
The victim in this case is being assisted by advocates from the Santa Barbara Rape Crisis Center.
