Advise Yourself

This afternoon, while driving the tedious drive down Milpas, I found myself stopped behind a black
Honda Pilot with a blue bumper sticker reading "Nobody can give you wiser advice than yourself". This
was all it took to get me on the road of reminiscence; to remind me of those gawky adolescent years
where my naivete must have eclipsed all forms of my intelligence.
People say that you should be thankful for the mistakes that you have made and to use them as a
molding block for your life but to be completely honest, there are definitely a few choices I made in my
early high school career that I wish I had done differently. At the risk of sounding cliche, most
importantly I wish I was able to prioritize what would really matter to me in the long run instead of
chasing those easily regrettable moments of ignorant bliss. It ranged from the simple things like
choosing a party over finishing an assignment to the more imprinting mistake of distracting yourself
with a guy which was an inevitable heartbreak.
Secondly, I wish I looked at change differently. Change was something I sought to avoid instead of
learned to appreciate. However, now I've come to realize that it's true what they say about change being
the only constant. Without change I would be that same wide-eyed, impulsive girl that first walked into
her freshman year. Lastly, I wish I hadn't worried about the things I couldn't do anything about. At the
age of 15 everything felt like the end of the world. But now I've found an escape within the concept of
surrendering. Life becomes a lot less stressful when you surrender to that which you cannot change. At
17, I sit here possibly overly confident in what I've learned these last few years. But in reality 10 years
from now I will look back at this with a whole new world of knowledge. I guess that's something I have
to look forward to.
