Ruptured Gas Line
updated: Sep 21, 2012, 1:30 PM

By the Urban Hikers

Construction workers building a fence between two cottages in the 1400 block of Garden Street hit a plastic gas line causing it to leak natural gas. As reported by Roger the Scanner Guy, just before 11:00 am on the Friday morning, a full fire response was initiated to investigate and manage the scene. In this busy block of downtown Santa Barbara (just across the street from Alameda Park and Kids' World) strong precaution was taken to safeguard the residents of the bungalow court as well as pedestrians and others in the area.

Within minutes of the 9-1-1- call, SBFD firefighters arrived and assessed the situation, turned off the gas to the water heaters and immediately contacted the Gas Company. There was estimated response time of 30 minutes, however representatives from the Gas Co. arrived more quickly than that.

Ironically, in preparation of the construction project, someone had taken the time to mark the gas line with little yellow flags, and the damage to the pipe happened right between two of the flags. Because gas lines are now made of plastic, they are easily punctured. Please use extreme care when digging or working near gas lines.

Santa Barbara Fire responded with 3 fire engines, 1 ladder truck and a Battalion Chief. Santa Barbara P.D. also responded to provide support and traffic control.
