Blackberry vs. iPhone
updated: Sep 21, 2012, 11:33 AM

Opinion Survey Question: How many of you think Blackberry will be around much longer?

Recently my 9930 performed a "self update" - and in the process removed a critical program ("core") that was essential to running (it promptly turned into a "brick"). Had programming restored, and just this week the "Blackberry App World" program updated itself - apparently with an incompatible version, the "App World" icon disappeared and a number of updates are queued and cannot install.

My experience with Blackberry service is terrible! Their web-based support pages clearly acknowledge buggy software but point me to solution links which are broken or months out of date!

In the meantime, I started using my wife's I-phone and love it! Screens are intuitive; data (unlike Blackberry) can easily and seamlessly be transported between different applications.

I know what I want for Christmas!

Not I. Their global outage just as the IPhone 5 was release was really funny.

Replacing my company Blackberry Tour with an iPhone by end of the year. H8 it. Have to pull the battery and reboot it monthly or it stops fully functioning.

Our company is in the process of ditching Blackberry and moving to the iPhone.

Businesses will keep RIM going for a while; too many email systems and internal protocols are into BBs. But definitely dying in the consumer world; hanging on by a thread for a while in the biz world.

I read an article saying that some companies stay with it because RIM has their own data network and the phone has better security than any other.

BB service remains great for international travelers, too - the flat monthly fee gets you email access almost anywhere there's cell service, so no roaming surprises or outrageous charges.

OP here. I am an indiviual consumer, not a business. And I agree RIM's fortunes were made based upon selling a high-security platform. But if I were a business user I would still wonder (based upon my experience with poor programming quality, updates, support, and disjointed, non-integrated third party apps) if RIM was going to be able to provide support 5 years or even 1 year from now..... I'm guessing RIM has lost a lot of talent.

Blackberry is a goner. They didn't keep current. Made your company need to purchase hardware and software to support the devices. Didn't take their competition seriously. Yep, done!

Business user here, with a company of many phones. We're all on Androids for smart phones. If I see someone with a BB these days, I sort of snicker.

I had a BB for about 3 months and hated it a few years back, ditched it for an iPhone as soon as I could, but that was just me. I know a lot of people that love their BB's and have begrudgingly been making the transition to iPhones or Androids. Like Google+ the BB will soon be a footnote in tech history.

Should we start taking bets? I'll set the over/under on the BB remaining lifespan at 12 months, any takers?

Blackberry is quite secure for a while, as all defense-related businesses use them almost exclusively.

That's one thing about Apple products and their operating systems...the military will NEVER use them. EVER.

Blackberry was great until iPhone and Android came out. Now, what's the point of the Blackberry? iPhone and Android do what Blackberry does just as well and you have a nice big screen to effectively do other stuff. The Blackberry screen size is just too small. Say bye-bye soon.

Blackberry & RIMM will be gone by May, 2013.

I have loathed the Blackberry since its inception. It is clunky. As for the "Security", it isn't that secure.
The main point of the Blackberry was it was a status symbol for poseurs. A place once held by pagers, before technology ran them over.

I like my BB,mainly because I prefer a true keyboard and am not a big fan of the touch screen. Have a non-clunky model and don't think of myself as a "poseur." Are all the people who love all things Apple well-described as "fanboys." I'm guessing that RIM, despite obvious problems, will remain in business for the foreseeable future.

I loved my Blackberry Tour (personal) and Bold (work). There are many features on them that are perfect for my business and personal life. But when it came time for an upgrade the boss was cheap and said, "Android or Apple?". I went with Android. Recently my Tour began having software issues so I kept the operating systems the same and got an Android. I miss the Blackberry, but there are many things I like about the Android. I'm not sure RIM will be around in 2015. At least not for non-business consumers.

923P, many business and consumers love their iPhones and are not "poseurs". FYI, as proof I will offer that BB went from 50% of the market to 5% of the market in the last 2 years. I guess we are all "poseurs". <:+)

938P: I was replying to _another_ comment re BBs, scroll down,or up, and read Julian's, hence the _quotes_ on poseurs. Am honestly not sure what you're saying here, though. More "poof" may be required.

Still kicking myself that I didn't short that stock years ago. I could see their demise coming from a mile off but didn't think it would happen so quickly.

Blackberry isn't going anywhere except in an acquisition. #1, the US federal government (and especially the GSA) have huge long term contracts with RIM, #2, in Europe and South America it is still the top selling and top contracted cell phone and #3, their patents are worth nearly four billion dollars.
