101 Rollover Accident
updated: Sep 20, 2012, 3:45 PM

By the Urban Hikers

A late model Cadillac sedan driven by a young man rolled into the center divider on the 101 under the Olive Mill Rd. over crossing on Thursday afternoon at about 1:30 pm. Another young man was a passenger in the car. This was a single-car accident.

The Cadillac was northbound when it drifted to the right side of the lane. The driver appears to have over-corrected, resulting in the car leaving the roadway and colliding with the center guardrail. The car then rolled, flipped over the guardrail and came to a stop when it hit the concrete over crossing center support about 10 feet above the ground. The car landed on its roof and came to rest on the hand of one of the men in the car.

Fire crews quickly stabilized the car with portable jacks and removed one of the occupants from the car. The car was literally balancing on the other occupant's hand, and freeing and the man safely was quite a heroic job. Due to the soft dirt and height needed, firefighters first had to build a cribbing with 4 x 4's under the car. They then placed a high- pressure air bag on the cribbing, and it was carefully and slowly inflated to lift the car off the man's hand. The man was then removed from the car. Paramedics took both men to the hospital for evaluation and treatment as indicated.

Montecito FD responded first to the scene with Engine 91, Rescue 91 and command staff. Santa Barbara Fire provided mutual aid with Engine 2 and a Battalion Chief, while the CHP responded with several units. Paramedics also arrived to tend to the medical needs of the accident victims.

Traffic in both directions was snarled on both sides of the freeway and on surface streets for a couple of hours while crews tended the injured and removed the wreckage.
