Where is the best place in town to buy sourdough bread, not any bread, just sourdough?

Our Daily Bread or D'Angelo's. I prefer ODB as D'Angelo's has a tougher chew and is just much denser in a way I do not find appelaing, personal preference.

I buy San Luis Sourdough at Gelson's--other stores may have it too. You can get it in a french bread loaf style or a round.

Ahhhh.. a fellow bread lover. Alas, all the old fashioned bakeries no longer exist. I hear ojai pizza uses a real bakery somewhere. Their sandwiches are the best!

If you're looking for pre-sliced, try 'Ferrara's', they sell it at Gelson's...it's delicious!

Nowhere since Vior's and Napoleon's left. Grocery store French bread is a bad joke. As are most items sold in this town carrying a "French" label. Sorry. :-(

Oneness Bakery. His country style loafs are to die for. It's very exclusive though, you need to know someone to get on the bread list.

D'Angelos is good. I like La Brea bakery's bread too, but you have to get it fresh. They have it delivered to Gelson's and also Whole Foods, but if you ask the manager when they arrive during the week you can get it as fresh as possible since La Brea bakes it overnight and puts it on the trucks before dawn.

San Luis sourdough is available at Costco for less than $5 for two loaves. It's just the plain white type. When it get it at Ralph's or Von's I buy the whole wheat kind. It cost $4+ for one loaf. It makes great toast. I'm headed to MA for the next 12 days tomorrow. It's a sourdough free area. Sob!

La Brea had the best bread there was before they sold to a major conglomerate. Now it is just mediocre no matter when you buy it. I read that the owner of La Brea took all the money she made sielling the company and invested it with Barry. Madoff. What a shame!

Barring a plane fight to the bay area, and a trip over to Berkley to the Acme Bread Co., you're not going to find the best bread here in SB. Seriously, try Ferrara's at Gelsons, it's very good.

La Brea and Ferrara's at Gelson's are the best sourdoughs. I try and get them as fresh as I can. Delicious toasted! Yummy!!

Ah, Vior's. The memories started with the bread truck photo thread. Dear departed dad was always in charge of the broiler garlic bread at home -- 40, 45 years ago. I bought San Luis SD rosemary and olive oil, from Ralphs, for years. I don't drive to D'Angelos, but what I've had from there is superb. Thanks for the recommendations here.

Oh -- I know it's not what you're asking for, but there were times in my youth with sourdough starter in the fridge. Mother kneading and feeding and proofing and baking. It was a great education; too bad I didn't follow it. But I do cook peasant food by instinct; I'm just not into baking.

They say sourdough starter doesn't get good until it has been around for at least 100 years. There are bakeries in San Francisco (Little Italy) that have been nurturing the same starter for 130 years. Not sure about anything like that available around SB but it would be interesting to know.

@522P- lots of people have their own sourdough starter sticking around, and yes they definitely improve with age. I have a friend who's mother has a 120 year old starter that's been in her family for generations. Most people who are proud of their non commercial starters are happy to double it and give you a sample. Sadly I accidentally let the one she gave me die. :( springtime in SB, when allergies are rampant, is the best time of the year to start your own SB native yeast culture, to make your own local sourdough starter.

d'Angelo's is the best in town for my money (the Sourdough Levain), taking over the top spot from La Brea when it it was sold as stated above.

We bought sour dough bread from Whole Foods, I think their baker forgot the sour dough starter. It was VERY dense and NO taste. Von's has an excellent sd bread, get there in the morning and it's fresh out of the oven. It's very soft and yummmmy.
