January 19, 2005 - An Ed of Nails
Ed, as you may have guessed by his name, is not a woman. He doesn’t get his nails done. In fact, he bites them down to the point where they cannot be bitten any more. Blame it on all those years hanging out at the racetrack, or blame it on all those hours working on websites, strung out on coffee and Red Bull. The fact remains that Ed has no nails. The chance of his quitting any time soon is unlikely. You might as well try to get that guy holding up the cardboard signs on the corner of Anacapa and Anapamu to stop smiling.
So, seeing how Ed cannot scratch a chalkboard, needs a spoon or a key to open a Coke can, and thinks French Tip
is a sandwich invented at a delicatessen in Los Angeles, he was absolutely no help in today’s article about how much it costs to get a manicure in Santa Barbara. With the weather yesterday rivaling that of any summer day, Ed saw the daily contest, said, “See ya!” and disappeared like free pizza in a college dorm room.
Yesterday, the dedicated staff of edhat.com, on our own for once, let our fingers do the walking and called all of the nail salons in the Yellow Pages. We wanted to find out how much it would cost for Madge to give us a basic manicure, a French tip, and false nails. For those of you not in the know, a basic manicure includes soaking, filing, and an application of nail polish.
For a French Tip, they paint the pink and white areas of your nails to make them look like they are naturally pink and white.
One way to choose where to get your nails done is by the name. Here in Santa Barbara, among other things, you can pick between many nail personas - Elite Nails, Fancy Nails, Famous Nails, Modern Nails, Today Nails, Artistic Nails, and Legend Nails. There is also Shear Design, Shear Pleasure, and Tips ‘N Toes.
Another way to choose where to get your nails done is by the price. The price for a basic manicure ranges from $10 ($1.00 / digit) to $25 ($2.50 / digit). French Tips can cost up to $45, while fake nails can cost up to $55.
Certainly there are people in the nail world who believe that you get what you pay for.
We saw a guy on State Street sitting on a bench filing his own nails. He wasn’t fancy, famous, or elite, but it looked like he was doing a swell job.
The average price of a basic manicure was $15.92 – when Columbus nailed the ocean blue. WindyOne won the daily contest with a guess of $16.25. You could say WindyOne nailed it. He/she wins an Edhat ensemble – a hat and an Edhat Classic t-shirt.
