November 29, 2009 - Brine is the New Black

This past week in Santa Barbara was short on news, and long on food. Less stuff was going on and repeated, as people stayed home brining their turkeys for a Thursday cook-along. The table talk about town was that the brine time paid off. Many wonderful meals were thoroughly enjoyed by large groups of family and friends.

And when the salt came off the turkey, some obedient shoppers bustled off to local stores to start their holiday shopping with seasonal bargains. The dedicated staff went out of the blew and into the black, to get a first hand look at the Black Friday activity at Paseo Nuevo. We found people dressed in the color noir, but no clear black-and-white signs that there was any serious shopping going on.

In the Sunday Edhat today, we have some turkey talk and some travel. We find out that the perfect piecrust is not as easy as pie. It's possible to write a novel in a month, and it's possible to get shingles in your ear. We also learn about the mystery of an un-ridden wave.

Next week is a big week for the dedicated staff of edhat.com. On Friday, we will be counting Santa Hats at the 57th annual downtown holiday parade, and next Sunday, two staffers will be running 26.2 miles in the 1st annual Santa Barbara International Marathon.

Lastly, congratulations to Santa Barbara High Water Polo coach Mark Walsh, and his wife, Cindy on the arrival of their new baby. Mason Walsh was born Saturday night, weighing in at 8 pounds 11 ounces, and 21 inches tall.

---- Edhat Stuff ----------------------------------

2009 Santa Hat Count (CONTEST) - Friday night is the Holiday Parade, and we will be counting Santa hats again. Guess the number of Santa hats worn in the parade, and you could win an Edhat t-shirt.

More Zaniness From Chez Freire (NEWS FROM NICOLE) - Did you eat too much like we did? Did you try and hog all the stuffing to yourself like I did? Actually, Turkey Day is sort of a blur to me. Why? I knew you'd ask.

Thanksgiving Marathon (NEWS FROM SILVIA URIBA) - Thanksgiving is definitely not considered a traditional Latino celebration, but my family and I, as well as many other Latino families, have made it ours.

Cai (DOG OF THE WEEK) - Cai is a 3 year old shitzu/dachsund mix (we think - she was a rescue dog from K9 Pals). Big personality for a little dog.

Slinky (CAT OF THE WEEK) - We adopted him 16 years ago when he was about a year old. He has been the sweetest cat you could ever ask for.
