Instant Surfage
by Paul Costales
What follows is the surfing week of two surfers, as told through their instant messaging. With non-working daylight hours scarce, split-minute decisions must be made about the worthwhileness of lunchtime sessions. What better way for these computer bound geeks to peer pressure each other into a surf session than instant messaging? Although IM'ing is short and to the point, it offers a unique glimpse into the lives of our surfers, "Phil" and "Hank."
Monday
Phil: something is rolling through out there. i'm on the fence and would need motivation.
Hank: I'm out for today. let's keep an eye on it for tomorrow.
Tuesday
Phil: I'm on for an 11:30 session. let me know if you want on this train.
Hank: I think this train is leaving the station without me.
Phil: Rode the fish. good times.
Wednesday
Hank: what do you think about a lunch sesh today? i haven't looked at the model. it's certainly beautiful out.
Phil: looking thigh high and fun. i'm rolling in a few so let me know if its longboards.
Hank: IN! trunks and jackets and LBs?
Phil: roger. on my way.
Thursday
Hank: Think we should try to surf it today? or take the day off. looks pretty small out there. could be convinced.
Phil: i'm probably going to try to make something happen. the model is still holding up. if the weather is still outstanding at 11:30 i'm going to hit it up. with the full expectation of groveling
Hank: okay, i'll join you.
Phil you all ready for this?
Hank: yea...let's do this
Phil: en route. i am amiable to trunks but i'll have fullsuit just in case. lbs of course.
Hank: it's over 85 degrees out...we're wearing trunks
Friday
Hank: i just went and took a little look at it. clean with some knee-thigh rollers coming through. not sure if you have a lunch session in you. i could be into it if you are.
Phil: oh yeah i got a lunch session in me. should we shoot for similar plan to the last few days?
Hank: i like the sound of that plan
Phil: although crowded out there
Hank: looks like some pelicans in the water
Phil: there will be pelicans
Hank: they will be wowed by our drop-step mastery
Phil: headin out
