White Trees
March 10, 2009
They stand like the ultimate Rorschach test. The question comes to mind...what do you see? A dog? A reindeer? The masses crying out for justice in an unjust world? Or just a couple of tree stumps? Well, that's what they are, but it's okay to let yourself go once in a while, you know.
The tree stumps are located on Calle Real between Patterson and the entrance to Patterson Storage. They are in what's left of the avocado orchard that once dominated that corner and parts beyond. And why are they painted white? A lengthy perusal of several gardening and botanical sites came up with as many explanations as possible Rorschach interpretations. Among them: So the bugs don't climb up the trunk; so the birds can see the bugs more clearly and eat them; so the trunk won't get sunburned; for visibility at night, and; because it looks cool. Note that the first three explanations would probably only apply to living trees, which these stumps clearly are not. So, that leaves the last two. Anybody?
Identifying the location of the sign earned contestants 4 March Edness points.
