Sunday July 22, 2012
By Music Academy of the West
Hailed by The New York Times as possessing "explosive vigor and technical finesse," the dynamic Miró Quartet, one of America's highest-profile chamber
groups, will perform a program of works by Mozart, Henri Dutilleux, and Beethoven at Santa Barbara's Lobero Theatre on Sunday, July 22. Featuring Mozart's
String Quartet in E-flat Major, Dutilleux's Ainsi la Nuit string quartet, and Beethoven's String Quartet No. 9 in C Major, Op. 59, No. 3 ("Razumovsky"), the
concert will begin at 4 pm. Tickets cost $41.
Now in its second decade, Miró Quartet continues to captivate audiences and critics around the world with its startling intensity, fresh perspective, and
mature approach. Founded in 1995 at the Oberlin Conservatory, the Miró met with immediate success, winning top prizes at the Coleman, Fischoff, and Banff
competitions, as well as the prestigious Naumburg Chamber Music Award. The quartet also was a recipient of the Cleveland Quartet Award and was the first
ensemble ever to be awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant. The Miró Quartet has collaborated with such artists as Leif Ove Andsnes, Joshua Bell, Eliot Fisk,
Lynn Harrell, Jon Kimura Parker, and Pinchas Zukerman, and has appeared regularly at the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Chamber Music Northwest, La
Jolla SummerFest, the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival, and the White Pine Festival. Having been heard on many national and international radio
broadcasts, the quartet has released numerous recordings, most recently a disc featuring live performances of works by Dvorák and Kevin Puts. Its recording
of George Crumb's Black Angels won the prestigious French Diapason d'Or prize. Deeply committed to music education, the Miró Quartet serves as the
Faculty String Quartet in Residence at the Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin.
The Lobero Theatre is located at 33 East Canon Perdido Street in Santa Barbara.
Remaining highlights of the Music Academy's 2012 season include an ambitious new production of Igor Stravinsky's exuberantly inventive opera The Rake's
Progress, as well as a performance by acclaimed pianist Ingrid Fliter. The Academy is presenting more than 200 events over the course of this year's Summer
School and Festival, which began June 18 and concludes on August 11. Additional highlights will include a performance by percussionist Colin Currie, as well
as conducting turns by Yan Pascal Tortelier, James Gaffigan, Alexander Lazarev, Andrew Grams, and Nicholas McGegan. Featuring the Academy's
exceptionally talented Fellows, together with illustrious guest performers and faculty, the events are being presented at the Academy's scenic Miraflores
campus and in venues throughout Santa Barbara.
