This past Saturday and Sunday, July 21 & 22, the Santa Barbara Surf Club participated in the 16th annual Malibu Boardriders Club "Call to the Wall" contest. This event donates much of its money to the Ronald McDonald House's Day at the Beach held annually at Leo Carrillo Beach. So, not only did contestants get to surf Malibu with only 6 people out, but they also helped raise money for a great cause.
This year the SBSC sent a full team of surfers and was hoping to better upon last year's impressive fourth place team finish (out of 22 clubs) overall. Although the waves were very meager, the weather was beautiful and the weekend proved to be very fun.
The results:
14 and under: Tyler Milhollin - 4th Place
15-19 Men: Spencer "Pecker" Hayes - 6th Place
20-29 Men: Cody Craig - 2nd Place
30-39 Men: Tommy Dane - 2nd Place
60-69 Men: Andy Neumann - 2nd Place (Andy Neumann surfed his first Malibu Contest in the early 1960s as a member of the Hope Ranch Surf Club and he is one of the founding members of the Santa Barbara Surf Club).
70+: Frayne Higgesan - 5th Place
15-19 Women: Chelsea Zaniboni - 2nd Place
35+ Women: Deb Trauntvein - 5th Place (the club president)
In the end, the club placed a very impressive 3rd place as a team (possibly the best ever result at the Call to the Wall Contest) behind the host club, the Malibu Boardriders (1st Place) and the Doheny Longboard Surfing Association (2nd Place).
Special recognition goes out to: Bryan Hope and Keri Holcomb, who surfed tandem for the club in their first ever contest; Mike Furner, who came out of semi-retirement to enter his first contest in years, just missing a spot in the 60-69 Finals; and, to the 6 person paddle board team that placed 6th in the Sunday Morning paddle board race.
Congratulations to the Santa Barbara Surf Club!
